I would suggest a bit of a highlight around the mon on the jingasa (emblem on the hat  ) and some varnish on the do (body armour).

Yes, the highlight on the hat has disappeared under the satin varnish.

Gloss varnish on the do?

Gloss or satin will do 

A mix of both in the unit would work quite well.

I've often toyed (so to speak) with the idea of collecting samurai, etc, but I know I'd never make any headway with all of those gorgeously-intricate patterns on their armor and kimono.

So, I've dusted off (well pulled out the sotrage box) these bad boys and aim to complete the last four dismounted sammies, a unit of twenty ashugaru, and as many of the mounted sammies as possible before the end of this fine initiative
