I have done both base marking by unit and a color coded figure.  My Cheerful Interference Association Operatives are RH Models in baseball caps.  Different colored cap for different squads.
My 3 regiments of Confederate cavalry all have the back of the wodden base painted in a regimental color.
I sort of prefer the former trick of a colored uniform item.

They were called Train Robbers (set 1&2) and Marshall's and Deputies (set 1&2).

Thanks mate.  Those Westwind Cowboy wars figures are great for the mounted and dismounted versions.   I only have the hunting parties and the Cartwright ripoffs, who I have named the Wainwrights.  Definately going to get some more.

I've started putting little paper flags on short lengths of paper clip on my figure bases at the back of my figures with numbers on them. That's on figures that I have multiple copies of and DnD figures currently. I'm going to do something similar with my western figures once I get done painting them, but I'm not sure if I'll use names or numbers.

Numbers would allow me to use the same figure for different NPCs.

names on bases is hit or miss for me.. I hate it when it's painted on all sloppy looking, which seems like how most end up.. but if it can be done really well it can add a lot to the model. I've been thinking about trying to do it with decals and just printing out my own on decal paper, with a cool looking font. Been too lazy to really try though.

What I do is put a letter or number on the bottom of the base. Then make a list of the names and co-ordinate the name with the number or letter. Any questions a quick look on the bottom of the base and match it up with the name. That way if you decide that you don't like the name or think of a cooler name then a quick change on the list and you have a new character.
