Any excuse for European/Colonial Infantry sans bayonets?

Reason I ask is because I just bought a set of these (British, roughly 1890 African style uniform) with two broken bayonets and one more has broken since.  Rather than lose the set, would there be any excuse to just chop 'em off and do a unit without?  I am willing to paint them as something other than British if needed.

Why not? They didn't have the bayonets fastened all of the time.

Exactly. Another option in the same vein is to leave the intact ones as-is but say that the ones with no bayonets simply didn't have time to fix bayonets/lost their bayonet (inexcusable!)/had "technical glitches"/whatever.

My sentiments exactly as  Fram.  In the heat of  the moment, survival takes precendence over form, go for it!
