Kryst Quar Works In Progress (image heavy)
« on: January 07, 2012, 08:23:58 PM »
Got these wonderful minis at Kublacon from the inventors themselves.  I really, really like the whimsical nature of this line.  I'm a big fan.

Finally started painting them, based off of Paintmonkey's (one of the Quar developers) example and the image in the book.  Having a hard time with brush control on them and a hard time with color selection beneath the overcoat.  Also, I think less is more, and that I made the jackets with too many colors.  There are four golds and browns plus the leather webbing.  Making contrast is not easy with that.  Simpler would have been better.

Learning a bunch about both the Reaper paints and painting in thin, wet layers.  I'm amazed by what a difference that technique makes for vibrant colors.  Thanks again to Paintmonkey's painting advice.  Now if I could just improve the brush control....  Wow, those photos make errors show up.

Anyway, here is a WIP of eight I've been slowly working on.  The ones with the highlighted bases are "done" except for some static grass and maybe some dots on the skin.  The others have the start of the jacket camouflage and base browns and grays for webbing and weapons.

Comments and criticism are most welcome!  Please be as critical as you like!

I really like it-that camo pattern is really cool!  I'm thinking you're unsteadiness will come out making it look really good once you wash/dip them  :)

Hmm, wasn't planning to do a dip or a wash.  It's an idea, though.

I second the wash or dip idea. I personally would go with a wash over a dip. Maybe if your feeling adventurous some mud splatters around the boots and lower parts of the coats? Since the Quar are WW1 inspired, theres nothing more WW1 than mud... well, maybe mass slaughter :P
