Hi David,

Trawling through my books I came across a paragraph that may narrow down your options for painting the Japanese afvs for the period in question. Referring to Japanese Armour 1931-45 (Camouflage and Markings (AJ Press English-Polish)) it mentions on page 13 that "Until 1941 in China and Manchuria four colour camouflage scheme was definitely preferred, where khaki was the dominant colour. Other colours were: yellow, which resembled the yamabuki flower (kerria Japonica; a kind of rose developing little, yellow flowers), and two shades of brown (parched grass and dark brown). It is worth noticing that from 1925 till 1940 vehicles additionally displayed occasionally thin black lines whose purpose was the separation of colours (Note 1).

Note 1. The the early 1930s, tanks were painted 5 colours (green, brown, dark brown, dark green and yellow) with black border lines. In the late 1930s, the paint of three colours (brown, green, dark brown) with yellow lines was the common camouflage.

My recommendation David is to purchase the aforementioned book as the authority for the period you are looking for.

I hope this maybe of assistance. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Cheers,

Helen

I guess, there is a story behind it. Would like to know why someone takes the color of flowers to paint tanks

Japanese rifles were stamped with the image of the chrysanthemum as this flower was the symbol of the royal family - and rifles were property of the emperor.  Possibly the yambuki flower also invoked some royal (divine) power...

That's certainly possible John.
