Isandhlwana-Rorke's Drift Anniversary

Purely coincidental, I finished Mike Snook's superb "How Can Men Die Better" Friday,  and started his "Like Wolves on the Fold" yesterday.  Now to get painting more Zulus....

I just finished the Osprey Rorke's Drift yesterday. Pretty amazing- like many others, my idea of what happened was pretty much based on 'Zulu'. Needless to say I learned a lot

Hard to believe the British made it out of the Drift with as few losses as they had, and after reading the causes of the Anglo-Zulu war I have to say I'm a little more sympathetic to the Zulu side.

Here's to courage, both sides had it.

I agree with you.
Both of Mike Snook's books are great, I have read and reread them a number of times.
Anyone out there plan to do the battles?

In the late 80's I painted about 100 Brits and 280 Zulus (Ral Partha 25m) and built Rorke's Drift from foam board and made mealie bag walls out of clay. I used Hal Thinglum's RD rules (which I still have--they are really clever and are great for any type of siege like RD) and played it out solo and with my brother several times. I eventually sold it all off at Historicon in 1996.  Since about 2005 I've been collecting Perry and Empress British Colonials and slowly started painting troops up for NWF/Sudan and Zulu War, and bought the Empress RD set over Christmas. I started painting in earnest last November after a long hiatus of several years, and if all goes well, plan on relighting RD with Hal's rules again by the time I retire at the end of 2013.

They lay about staring at me wondering when I'm going to start painting them.

I spent today still wondering when my episode of Mastermind is coming on the telly. I answered questions on the Zulu War,aledgedly.

Neck deep in AZW at the moment, 64 Zulus painted and ready to base this week, 32 more primed. Auxiliaries in prep mode with some lancers and additional infantry on the way. I'll have about 300 Zulus and 120 Brits of all troop types ready by end of February.
