My heart truly bleeds for you.  I had a similar thing happen.

My first chiid had just come home from the hospital and my wife was on our couch visiting with her best friend.  I had just finished painting twenty-five British red coats and formed them in a lovely square on our living room floor to show the ladies my wonderful work. (They were almost impressed too) My wife feeling poorly, I escourted her friend to the car and the door locked behind me.  I knocked on the door and... My lady picks up our first born and steps on the square.  :o :'( :'( very heavy losses to the square!!

I couldn't paint for weeks. Wife and child ok.

On a good note -- My little girl is 19 and still wargames with dad & the boys.
