Amazing War Stories at Southern Front
« on: October 02, 2006, 12:16:32 PM »
I ran 'Kyll River' again at Southern Front. All three games I've done have been exciting, but this one was a real nail biter. The allies wee unable to bring down even one of the zombies as they marched towards the bridge. The German's seemed in great position to win until the 'nightfall' encounter card came up reducing their vision to 12". They had to scramble close enough to try and detonate the bombs on the backs of the zombies. That late movement might have cost them the game. They were able to detonate one, but not a second, as the allies successfully protected the bridge!

Highlight of the game - US Supersoldier Steve Grant finally met German Supersoldier Franz Grueber in single combat hand to hand and knocked him out with one punch! Later in the game Grueber recovered and got back up only to be knocked out again by Grant!

I had great players who really got into the game. Here are a few pics...

Awesome game, Marc! I read Kim's summary over on TMP (link here) and it sounds like you had a blast.

Game looks great, and the scenario must be designed well if every game it produces is a nailbiter. Congratulations!

No picture or mention of the rocket troops this time. Did they all smack into the trees?

Actually they both survived the entire game. The grade 1 did lose all use of his arms, but that's a small detail in the scheme of things.

The grade 2 spent most of his time bullet-striking everyone in sight.

There is one picture there-- if you look at the one where Boris the Flesh Construct is facing off against all the zombies on the road you can JUST see one of their finned helmets beyond the pack 'o' undead.  Both of the Rocket Troopers did rather well, in fact.  They didn't actually take out any zombies, but they kept bullet striking the pack and knocking them back a bit each time.  Between that and the shooting of the GIs the zombies had a hard time getting to the bridge.

Since shooting could do virtually nothing to the zombies unless you rolled a one for a head shot, Marc had each hit knock the undead bastid back a half inch.  It made the US player feel that it was at least somewhat worthwhile to try even if the odds were slim to "kill" one.

The guy without the shirt?

I believe that is from Brigade Games. One of the flesh construct types.

That's the one!  He is listed as a German Flesh Construct and was painted to be just that.  In the game he was reborn as Boris the Angry Nazi Hating Russian Flesh Construct With Mental Problems.  I think that name was too long fro Brigades catalogue, though...

Unfortunately the player running him didn't read the stat sheet close enough and thought Boris could do something more with that gun than beat people with it. Boris doesn't have the whole trigger technology down quite yet...

That final picture was the coolest scene out of all three times I've run the game. Night has fallen and the GI's are crossing the bridge to face off man vs. zombie.

It was pretty intense.
