Ancient hunt
« on: 01 February 2012, 12:04:43 PM »
for my 7 AD project I'm thinking of filling the forest with some animals as chase or just for some random action. Do someone have any ideas what sorts of wild animals have been hunted back those days in Europe 2000 years ago? What about bisons?

Real men hunt Aurochs and, last time I looked, Excalibur Miniatures had one.

Bison would definitely fit – they were once widespread across Europe, but these days I think found only in parts of Poland and Lithuania.

Plus all those previously mentioned, especially the aurochs.

Ditto for bears and boars :) B&B
Do not know if they hunt them but You definetly need a wolves pack to disturb the hunt. I imagine an ancient forset as a spooky place where wolves are the first menace and, if I recall right, you have quite a number of them :D
Planning some funny hunt game I would add to the hunters' group some dogs too.

Yes, the wolves got to the party as well.

Good idea to include some dogs. What breeds would be plausible?

You would have to have mastiff and Wolfhounds :D I think Alternative armies do a cracking couple of wolf hounds, not running mind you but big buggers, and for mastiff either Vendel (SGMM) or warlord. The GB dogs would be nice to and probably more realisitc in size.

Outpost also do some lovely big dogs in their conquistador range that would work

All of the above plus rabbits and hares. Hares were sacred to some ancient Germans(anglo saxons). Spring was personified by a hare called eostre. Hence the Easter bunny.   Oh yeah, dont forget slave hunts!!!

Moose was definitely around there. some Roman historians mentioned them. Are there appropriate moose figures out there?

Chihuahuas.

wrong continent :)

thought of them already but will be hard to get some decent models. The Mega minis ones are way too large.

No pic, but this is from the old HLBS 'Great White North' range (I think that's what it was called). I have this mini – really good sculpt, good scale. Fits handily on a 40mm base.
