Quick question:

I know you always paint in sections, so pantaloons come after skin etc etc, but heres the thing, is he wearing socks?
Or more accurately, stockings of some sort?

As Ive just been looking at him again and to me, he looks bare shinned.....
Wondered if you'd give it any thought? As your skin tones so far are really very very good indeed....
and the thought of matching them may be a " a bit of a bugger"....

So class, "Did Tortuga based Pirate Ex-gunners mates of the mid 1700's wear socks? Stockings? Or something all together more, well, piratey?"

Discuss.....

stockings pal, there is no definition to his ankles but matching in the skin would be no problem mate, I painted each section of his torso seperately so chest, face, arm, arm, and back individually and you will be hard pressed to notice the difference

Great stuff, Dee!
But just a concern on the tatoos. Aren't they too intricate? And where are all the naked women and mermaids? ;)

Thanks pal, i was going to do boobs as they are my 2nd favourite thing in the entire world but thought nah only place I could have done it was on his back and tits tattooed on your back is a prison term for well do i need to elaborate......

I think you would have been hard-pressed to find any tattoo on a pirate, simple or intricate. Tattooing wasn't a fashion among European sailors until James Cook's voyages to the South Seas. His men (and even one of his officers) came back covered in Polynesian tattoos and the fad spread like wild fire (and is still going strong). A 'Pirate of Tortuga' is about a hundred years too early, unfortunately.

But hell, pirates don't need to be historical. They are their own genre and inhabit their own universe that doesn't have to obey the rules, as Johnny Depp has shown us. That guy is so cool. But the thing I am most impressed with is not the tattoos (great though they are), it's his chest hair. That's blinkin' marvellous.  :)

Bugger, lets hope the judges aren't that up on their naval tattoos and i get marked down on it :D  and thanks pal, that chest hair was inspired by a topless photo of Alex Baldwin......and i got the weirdest of looks when i was handed my dinner and it was still on screen.........

right little work done today, was out half the day so not as much work done as I would like, having a dinner break before I try and finish off the socks and trousers

But surely the Endeavour's voyage was mid 18th century? And trade routes to the east had been open for decades, so by the end of the 18th tatau's or tatoos would have been common place amongst well traveled nautical coves.... just out the "Golden Age" I aggree, but there must have been the odd pirate knocking around somewhere....

Even Mr Izzards Jon Silver, in the recent Sky adaptation, was seen sporting a fine facial tatau..... and Treasure Island IS mid 18th!

Yes, tattoos were certainly in vogue among sailors by the end of the 18th Century. But our lad's base of Tortuga (the figure is called "Pirate of Tortuga", I believe) had stopped being a pirate haven a couple of decades before the end of the 17th, and the age of piracy was practically over by the mid 1720s. Treasure Island is fiction and is anyway also set before Cook's voyages. I'm not saying it is impossible, but would not have been typical. Very, very rare to non-existent is more likely. Modern European tattooing can be traced to the South Seas voyages of discovery. Someone with tattoos before that time would have been exceptionally rare, and would have created a huge storm of publicity and interest as a curiosity.

But on a fictional pirate, who cares?

Coming along beautifully, Mr. Dee. Damn, I wish I could paint like that.

Well I can say one thing..........

I sure as hell ain't getting rid of them took me an entire evening to do :D

Right done a little more, done his sword and socks and finished off his trousers ready for weathering, you will notice the patch is made of a segment of French flag bearing the Fleur de Lis to suggest past prizes maybe, also gave me chance to do a little random freehand.

I could bore you with a long winded explanation..........

OR

I could just show you......

added texture to the pants and patch to make them look like linen and then got my vast array of weathering powders out

I feel poorly sick this evening so might have a forced painting absence for a few days if a good nights sleep dont sort me out
