My father clued me in to this short story about John Carter and Mars, by Geoff Ryman. The first third or so is especially eerie:

Interesting style. Reminded me more of Lovecraft than Burroughs at the end. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice work! Absolutely agree that there's more than a touch of Lovecraft in there. Even in the earlier parts it has the same kind of setup hints.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Dissapointed when it ended.......really got pulled into it which is the joy of a well written story.
