Medieval scribe sculpt by me.
« on: 14 February 2012, 11:09:22 PM »
Latest sculpt from me, intended as a medieval scribe. He's 28mm "scale" sorry I forgot the ruler again! he's similar in size to Perry historicals rather than GW size. I did it to practice my drapery, I don't know if it looks overly fussy compared to the merchant that I sculpted last week. Also I'm not entirely convinced by the hand at the quill or the parchment now i look at the enlarged pics, a few edges could be sharpened too.......maybe time to invest in an optivisor? Or just take more photos along the way to reveiw the process as it progresses.

Sculpted in Uro polymer clay, he is for sale as usual, pending possible revisions. PM me here or andrewjohnmay1983 AT googlemail DOT com
Thanks for taking a look, crit welcome.  8)

Note I mis typed my email add, it's been corrected now. o_o

Stunning.

Yeah, now you come to mention it, the hand is not the best part. It doesn't seem to be holding the quill so much as trapping it. The quill itself is a great bit of sculpting however.

The face is outstanding. Love the expression, and the way you've done the beard. And the way the tunic (mantle?) drapes looks very good indeed.

Thanks Redorc.
You see the problem is that when you're sculpting such a tiny figure you don't see the imperfections quite so well as when they're magnified 5X on the monitor! Still it's a valid way to learn I suppose, I can't gave cameras for eyes now can I....

Honestly, I've had exactly the same painting. I think 'that looks pretty sharp', take a pic of it, put it up here or on my blog where it's 10 times as big and go '... err, except for those blobby bits, and how did I miss that bit where I put a line of flesh on her hat, and what's that white bit on his arm?'.

Come to think of it, I've done much worse painting!

It really is very nicely done. I'd happily have one in my collection/badly painted by me on my tabletop as a wizard, cleric, scribe, advisor, monk, sage or other general medieval/fantasy educated chap.

Lovely work Andrew. If you were able to reposition the tips of thumb and index finger of the right hand he'd look like he was about to write on the parchment, which for me would be perfect.  :-)

Wow... that's a wonderful figure.

I guess the hand could be clutching the quill in its fingers, rather than 'pressing' it against the chest.

Still, it's a heck of a lot better than anything I could do :)

Thanks all, I've fixed the hand but I'm not sure on the new hat. Any thoughts?

It's a great sculpt, Andrew, but agree, the hat looks a bit wrong. I think it should be sitting a bit lower:

It's a fantastic sculpt, the hand looks better but I would agree with Prof the hats not quite right also the hand & parchment doesn't look quite right he's not really holding it, it's like he's dropping it

I like what you've done with the hand and quill but I have no knowledge of medieval hats  :)

To be perfectly honest, I dont think I would have complained if I had bought him in his original 'state'.
Great sculpt, you perfectionist, you!  ;)

Lovely figure.
