Mini matches to CONAN comic creatures
« on: 19 February 2012, 06:17:45 PM »
If you want monstrous foes for your Cimmerian team and not just Byzantine ruffians, one great resource are the collected Savage Sword of Conan comics. Nearly the entire run has been reissued by Darkhorse in omnibus-style books. Penned on the pages are some creatures that can be found, nearly mirrored, in miniature form. My focus recently has been to shape enemy warbands, like the ubiquitous Undead and Serpent-Men. Everybody knows that anything arising from a tomb or slithering on the ground gets an Atlantean sword to the neck. However, there is a wide variety in the comics, which I'll start to post.

First are some Rat Cultists that made the cover of one issue (painted by the great Earl Norem). I found their matches at Highlander Studio, along with a fantastic Pit-Fighter Rat. This warband will fall in the "Were-Beast" category. Conan fights a number of were-tigers as well, but I'm not sure if I should mix the two. Rather, I have some previous purchases from Bronze Age Miniatures - a were-boar and Ogre (in armor that matches the Pit Rat). All I need to finish the set is a Shaman or Were-Priest...which I could use suggestions for.

Last picture is an exact match I wasn't expecting to see, but there it is  :D

GREAT FINDS! The minis really do look like the images from the cartoons (I guess they're called "graphic novels" now). I hope this means we'll soon get to see your painted versions of the Beasties.

A reference to, and better still art from, the Savage Sword of Conan comics always make my day - thanks

Wonderful art.  Like Black and White movies the monochrome tones have a magical detail that is lost in colour

and the stories enchanted me - I  had read most of the Conan Canon but the art bought them to life and Conan will always look like this to me.

Good luck with the project
No dear, they are not toys, they are models

Wow, those are very close. Wonder if that's a coincidence or not.

I may have a boarman shaman somewhere I could dig out and take a picture of if you're interested.

I recently (as in so recent it hasn't got here yet!) ordered that Reaper winged-ape, and for the exact same reason!

There are quite a few Conan and Red Sonya homages in the Reaper line, including Arnie doing his zen-swordsman pose and a few others. Also, the Avatars of War Barbarian is based off of a Marvel comic cover.

The Rat-Men are on order, so eventually I'll have a post with painting results. I figure 4 different monster troops (undead, serpent-men, beast-men, ???) versus the heroic team will keep things engaging. I'm still looking through the comics to make a decision on enemy team 4; contenders include soul-eating demons, aquatic Cthulhu-beings, and deadly Amazons with dinos.

Any models I should consider for a Rat/Boar/Were shaman or sorcerer would be appreciated.
EDIT: found a rat mage at Ironwind metals  :)

If it's the one I think of, it's really small though (true 25mm scale).

Crap, I forgot to consider what scale the Ironwind products are. The only Ral Partha I've bought are a couple monsters, from a dealer selling by weight at a con. The skeleton smilodons and Shadowrun spiders (call 'em iron golem arachnids painted like this) look fine next to 32mm heroes.

I really like the Clan War creatures, and some of their fantasy sculpts. The Naga and (beergut-less) Ogre are on my want list. Sadly, no Rat Priest among the selections. I may have to give my beastie team an evil human wizard, or a goblinoid caster.

The skeleton smilodons

These smilodons are very cool. Are they still available?

Prof,

I think I saw the the skeletal cats on the IW site, for something like 6.00 USD.

The Were-Sorcerer search may be over; in the pic below are the final candidates. Crocodile Games WarGods of Aegyptus line has some great vulture witches and "demon doggy" minions of Typhon. These guys don't have an overdose of Egyptian dressing, and could pass for a wasteland/atlantean cult. As an option, I have some usual suspects for D&D monster magic-users - the tiger-headed Rakshasa (in a costume from Aladdin on Ice?) and a Reaper-brand Mind Flayer. Conan and TSR critters overlap to a point...anyway, thoughts welcome.

If you want some Clan Wars Naga, I've got a bunch I'm looking to get rid of...

What I'm curious about is that more traditional Naga you've got pictured there - the snakey one.  Where's that from?
