Painting sarissa buildings?
« on: 23 February 2012, 04:21:36 PM »
Bought 3 sarissa buildings a while back and been thinking about how to paint them. Tried out painting as a normal mini on a few of the boxes that came with the warehouse but notised the wood suck up the paint realy quickly so I dont get a good result on drybrushing and washes so wondering if anyone here has any tips.

Maybe try spray priming them first?  It should help on the wood sucking up the paint.  I don't know, do not have them myself, though I do want them.

Lucky Joe (of this forum) has had some sucess that you can see on his blog here: http://ljshobbyspot.blogspot.com

He also has a thread here. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=36985.0

@ A_Train: Thanks very much for the link.  :)
The Sarissa Precision buildings I have painted have not had any problems taking paint. I lightly primed them first with Krylon spray primers and then painted them with acrylic craft paints, slightly thined with water. I was careful to make sure there wasn't too much water, because I was afraid some of the water might soak into the mdf, even through the primer. That did not occur, however. The only problem I had was when I accidentally sprayed the primer on too heavily, it clogged the lines between bricks. I was able to fix that easily, though, by gently running a scalpel blade through the overspray to restore the lines. Good luck with your buildings and I hope you'll post some pics of your progress.

I've been asked by a friend to assemble & paint a few of the Sci-Fi models he intends to buy when he's in the States.
I guess I'll try a layer of gesso before I start painting.
Will post my findings afterwards, but IIRC his trip is planned for april, so not within the next couple of months.

I spray basecoated mine with Army Painter primer grey, then drybrushed a lighter grey over the top.  Seemed to work out OK.

Yep, should be fine. Be wary of washes though, they don't go well with wood.

Pretty much any non water-based primer will be OK. Car primer spray will work but specialist brush on primers for decorating woodwork are better. Must be matte finish though!

Other option if spraying is difficult (location, humidity etc) is to coat each piece with a 3:1 Water: PVA mix. This is commonly what we use at work for sealing any porus surface from DryWall/Plasterboard, cement and concrete to wood/particle board. There are proprietary brands available at building supply stores which have anti fungal and other treatments in them but for hobby use a PVA/Water mix is sufficient.

I wouldn't use GW Spray primer only because it costs probably double what any other brand of primer will cost you, and you will have a lot of area to cover.

How about sanding sealer used on model aircraft bodies?
