Civilians for Lord of the Rings?
« on: 27 February 2012, 02:22:54 PM »
I've been thinking about playing the odd scenario in with the good old GW LotR range involving rescue missions of civilians. However, unfortunately said company has not produced any civilians for the range.

Hence my question: do you know of any fantasy civilian models that fit to the GW range it size and somewhat in style?

All these Warhammer-look-alike late medieval-rennaissance style models don't fit at all. Most companies tend to produce either too stocky/burly kinds of people, grotesquely comic-like miniatures that for me would destroy the image of the LotR range which I see as more delicate and elegant.

I'd be happy for any help.

Ditto on the Perry Miniatures recommendation - see their Crusades and War of the Roses ranges (the Agincourt range is all military, I think).

The Perrys also sculpted a good few medieval civilians for Foundry, which may still be available (beware the more recent civilians by other hands which are bulkier).

Front Rank may have some compatible figures too.  Or Kingmaker, if the Hussite period isn't too late for your tastes.
Back from the dead, almost.

Ebob made some notBree characters

Dave T had some Foundry medieval civilians among some assorted medievals recently, may still be available but you would have to take the military types as well unless you contact him through his e-store and see what he has.

Don't know about manufacturers, but don't pass up Ancients ranges for civilians. The basic design of the gown didn't really change a lot for about 4,000 years. And a tunic is still a tunic.

With GW's range being based on the film aesthetic, I'm thinking Dark Age civilians from Gripping Beast may do the trick. Particularly for Rohan. I'm thinking of the scene where the wild men of Dunland are sacking the village and a woman sends her kids off on a horse that's too big for them.

Unless I'm misstaken DH is looking for something matching the old GW range, from the 80s.

Best bet would be the C46 range. http://www.solegends.com/citc46/index.htm

Granted, some are too cartoony - but it's the best match I think.

Reaper has some useful bits:

Warlord Games has some Celtic civilians too:

Then you have Gripping Beast but these are a bit crudebecause they are early releases:

And finally some good old Foundry. For some reason I can't post the pic, here you are a link:

you really have to be careful with scale here, as the GW LotR stuff is definatly NOT heroic scale, but rather a more realistically proportioned scale.

I have used Perry and Ebob, and they scale very well indead.

You could also try some fantasy civilians from Megaminis. Not the greatest figures but... http://freeboardgamesnow.com/fantasytownfolk.aspx

I don't have any specific suggestion, but definitely agree that non-heroic scale dark age/classical civilians is the aesthetic you're looking for, though late medieval figures can also work for lords or rich merchants (i.e. Denethor's outfit in the films).

Of course it also depends on where the action is. If you're doing Bree, Arnor, or maybe even Dale, you might get away with using civilians from several centuries later!

How about Mirliton? They do a range of civilians and vignettes which I believe are on the slighter side...

Thanks for the suggestions. It's definetely hard to find compatible miniatures and the ones I'd prefer are prbably on the large side. Oh well, I'll get busy looking up your suggestions and hopefully come to some result. Should I decide on any particular range and paint them I'll post them here.

Thank you all for your input.
