I'm currently in the throws of collecting heraldic info on who may have ridden with the Teutonic Order in the 13th C. I'm really not looking for the heraldry of the Teutonic order, rather those knights that would have fought along side of them.

Does anyone know of any resources? Perhaps someone does a flag sheet of some kind?

Thanks in advance,

Darrell.

Maybe this link can help you. But there are mainly the allies of the teutonic order at Tannenberg/Grunwald. You find also flags for the polish and the lithuanian army.

A lot of well-to do young noblemen from all over Europe did a "turn" with the Teutonic Order (six months or a year), and during that time would have used their own personal heraldry. A bit like a modern gap year, except you took a sword and armour with you... :D

Yeah, I know. Thing is I want the army to be as historical as poss. so i'm actually looking for contemporary examples at the very least and hopefully some of the knights that fought alonside the Order at Lake Peipus etc.

There is some stuff in Ian Heath's Armies of Feudal Europe but not all that much.

@Koppi, thanks but Tennenburg/Grunwald is too late for what I'm planning.

Appreciated though gents  8).

German heraldry is rather tricky to find
this is the Zurich roll of rams (early 14 th century)

Darrell,

Does David Nicolle's Osprey on Lake Peipus have anything in it?

I'll borrow a copy at the weekend as i'm off for a warm up game before venturing down the the Beast HQ for a WAB Medieval event.

There was a two volume set on the armies at Tannenberg that had the heraldry of the forces involved. I haven't seen it in years, but I'm pretty sure it had the "con frere" brothers arms also. It was by a Polish company, but had text in English. I've been searching the net, but can't find it at the moment. Not much help, but maybe it will jog someone else's memory.

The Teutons at Lake Peipus were followed by Livonian Brothers of Sword

Also they had some Denmark knights and some vassals of Bishopric of Dorpat on their side, number 3 on the pic is one of the Dorpat Kinghts

ans some more pics of the forces at Peipus lake

Thanks Prof.  8)

Three down and 21 to go  :). Although I guess I could do one of the units of 12 as Livonian Sword Brithers so a probable 9 more coats of arms are needed  :).

At present they're an unpainted concept  lol.

I've got the mini's cleaned up and undercoated but need to wait until I have all the heraldry etc in order. nothing worse then becoming unstuck in the middle of a project- or do I mean distracted?  lol

I'll post up some pics of the  project as it emerges.

Darrell.

Hi !

@ Prof : where did you find those somptuous pictures ?

@ Atheling : I got a little book "Wargaming the 13th Century Baltic Crusades" by Paul Stein and there is a list of Gentry Crusading knights inside with description of coats of arms ... My son will scan it and i will post it later this day ...

I know for instance that Gaston "Fébus" , Comte de Foix , has done the "Voyage de Prusse" during 13th century ...

I hope my english language is sufficient to be understand  :?

It's from a Russian book "Battle of the Ice" written by Alexander Shcherbakov, here the online version:
