Figures That Scale Well With GW's LotR Line?
« on: March 21, 2012, 05:37:29 PM »
I am looking for figures that scale well with GW's LotR line of plastic and metal miniatures.  These would be "true" 28mm or thereabouts.  No over-sized weapons, hands, etc.

I am going to look into Mithril's line, but I am wondering what else might be out there. I am mainly looking for character models to act as Captains for my plastic Wood Elf and Dwarf Ranger warbands.

Thanks!

Maybe Red Box? They're a bit on a the small side, but this would be less of an issue with true scale 28mm than it is with heroic 28mm.

I don't think that Red Box are big enough. I have some ( and I've compared them side by side ), and the dwarves are extremely small, with the elves and humans a bit smaller than the LoTR line. It's a shame, as they're beautiful miniatures. I just wish that they were a bit larger in scale. If the new ones that are being made are a bit larger, then they might work.

Tell me about it. Red-Box's scale is very sadly frustrating (most of my stuff is heroic scale 28-32mm), which is a double shame, since I love the style and look of his figures.

That's odd because I think the Red Box minis are bang on the LoTR size? What's going on? ???

I'm just painting some GW LOTR orcs at the moment to be the opponents of Redbox Games elves, they are perfect together,I don't really find the RBG mini size an issue,Reaper for instance are much more of a problem.

Here are some comparison shots of RBG with LOTR. clickety click!

I think they're a pretty good match.

If I may post here my own comparison shots, unpainted ones are all RBG:

Ok, there is some variation among the RB human minis, the one in the centre is actually taller than the LoTR minis. The rest are the same or just a mm shorter. People aren't all the same size and all that. Perhaps one thing that may disturb is that the LoTR humans seem to have tad larger heads?

The differences between the dwarves are negligable really?

Hobbits are again maybe a mm shorter or so? I see no problem here. But then YMMV.

Those look like they go well together. I re-checked my RBG figs last night (the only ones I could find at the moment), and they still seemed small. Then I cross-checked with RBG's website, and I realized that I was comparing a shireling ( who really, really looks like a dwarf ) to a LOTR  dwarf, and a half-elf to a LOTR human. It's been awhile since I got those figs.

So, thanks for clarifying - I defer to you guys. They look like they'll scale in well with the LOTR figs. I may just have to get some more now...

Oh yes, I think in my pics of the human minis, the top left is actually an elf?

That's correct (or as RBG calls them "Aelfar").

And yes, they really do seem to scale well with the LotR line.

Guys, thanks! Red Box looks like a real winder and the Dwarves will make a nice addition to my LotR force.

Those Dwarfs do indeed look really good size wise. I've not really come across Red Box before, so I think I will pay their website a visit and see what else fits in - you can never have enough Dwarfs!

You may try Hasslefree, Heresy, and some Reaper figs.  Just thinking outside the Red Box.  Ooooh, yeah, bad pun there....
