Donkeys dressed in the skins of Lions :-)
« on: March 26, 2012, 06:48:38 PM »
A 10 man band of Ngoni. Figures by Copplestone and a pleasure to paint. I have 30 more Ngoni and am considering basing them in 3s or 5s i.e. on larger bases. Mainly because I find that moving these figures singly based can be a pain on the tabletop plus there is always the occassional nimrod who will try to lift them up by the shield or the spear. Any thoughts in that regard?

Those are great!  :o
Regarding the bases, I have the same dilema with my own Ngoni  lol. I was thinking about making little irregular shaped movement trays for 4 or 5 minis each.
Like these ones I found on the net, but for less minis:

I think it could look good and it´s more than probable that I don´t have so much Ngoni left when it comes to hand to hand combat so the multibases should not be a problem anymore at this stage of the game  ;)

Very very nice Fanis. Love the skin tones,(not too dark). And the shields are fantastic.

Really like these.  As for the multi base.  I prefer the single base.  You make a valid argument though for the mutlibase.  Some people don't know what goes into painting and getting a figure ready for the tabletop.

Nice work! I can see some Ila lurking about in the background, be nice to see a close up of them too if you find time.

Look at Litko Horde and Skirmish bases (or even rank bases) in sets of various amounts.  I once had him make custom 25 mm x 50 mm trays (1 x 4, 1 x 5) for prone troops.

Gracias,

Glenn

Great skin tones.
Go with movement trays,
if you play with different rules.
You have the best of both worlds.

Thank you kindly lads.

Re the basing system I too like the singly based figures more; especially for the games I am planning i.e. skirmish type games using In the Heart of Africa (mind you that can have up to 200 figs on the table so I am not sure if it qualifies as skirmish! lol)

Movement trays might be the way to go. I can still base them singly and just plop them on there for convenience and safety of the figures themselves. Will probably defer the decision till I have finished more armies for the period. Up to now I only have my Belgians completed (53 figures worth) and 4 other armies on the go at once! lol

Many thanks for the offer re the bases James; I will certainly contact you once I have settled on what I want.

Clearco that is a very nice force of ngoni you have there! And you painted them so fast too!!!

After loosing a couple bayonets on my ACW soldiers I found that replacing them with the end of pins discouraged that short of thing.  lol

Oops!  lol my mistake Clearco! I just read through your post too fast and assumed they were yours.

Incidentally I just realized that at my current rate of painting i.e. some 12 28mm figures per month it will take me 5 years to paint all the Darkest Africa miniatures I have!!!! A bit of a shock really! I must stop buying stuff!
