Fake fur grass test
« on: 03 April 2012, 04:02:28 AM »
I tested out fake fur (aka rabbit fur) shaved to different lengths and painted in different shades for use as a maintained lawn.

I think all the tests look pretty good and will be useful in future builds, but I like C the best. A little more on the subject at my blog.

They look good, but not 'maintained lawn', more unmaintained rough grassland. For maintained grass flock is probably best to get that golf green sort of look.

Shaving fake fur, is that the first sign of wargame induced madness?  lol

Doubly so if you save the shavings for later re-use...

That way lies true madness*.

Those look great, the Easter Bunny involved has gone to a very good cause!

I've done a couple of pieces of fake fur rough grass and had an issue with the paint clogging and knotting up the fur, which you don't seem to have even on your longer piece "B". What types of paints or dyes did you use on your fur?

Wirelizard: Thanks, I used cheap o delta ceramicote paint. I did use a course stiff hair brush, which may be the difference.

Finarfin and MOdman: I did stop for road kill once, but it was for antlers...

Lee: Thank you!

Galland, joroas, SBRPearce: It did feel a little strange, and
i did contemplate saving it, but it was a bit too fluffy. (so only 15% extra ,madness)

Dijit: I hear ya, but with the grass the right setting, I hope to pleasantly suprise you.

I've done fake fur terrain before, but what I did was mix up some acrylic with water and soaked the fur in it, essentially "dying" rather than painting it. took bloody forever to dry though, and hen it did I had to comb it out to separate the hairs. NOT something I'd recommend.

Apparently the master of Fake Fur terrain (Elladan of Elladan.de) uses an airbrush and a high-pigment paint. That seems like a much smarter way to go.
