Melting Elmers Glue?!?!
« on: 03 April 2012, 03:42:00 PM »
Hey All,

Really strange thing happened to me last night.  I have a set of 20mm Stan Johansen figs that I'm working on.  I based them on 5 euro cent coins and secured them with a/b putty.  then as a baseing, I used first watered down white glue with small stone. Let it all dry.  Primed the figs before painting.

Painting the figs themselves went off without a problem, but then I started painting the bases near the end of the project.  After a few moments the wet paint started to liquify the white glue and the stone came off in clumps.

I stripped the stone off, reglued with brand new undiluted glue and tried again.  Same result. ?!?!  I simply don't recall in the many hundreds and hundreds of figs of done this way this happening with.....

For the next set I just used superglue...

Any ideads?

At a guess, the white glue on the bases wasn't perfectly dry.

Damp or still wet white glue will happily dissolve, but perfectly dry white glue generally won't, although I have softened it with too much water over it.

Any ideas?

BTW, what country has both Elmer's brand glue and 5 euro cent coins? I thought Elmer's was confined to the US. Check the fine print on that specific bottle of Elmer's.

It was not the washable stuff, meant for wee little school kids and the convenience of their mom's (who insist on washing glue and other fun substances out of school uniforms) by some chance?

That stuff is formulated to do exactly what yours did even after it had dried.

The Netherlands, I brought the glue from home :)  No, it's the regular old Elmers....  Bummer, I went back to super glue...

This is an entirely unhelpful post, I know, but wouldn't "Melting Elmer" be an interesting character for It Came from Beyond the Still?
