Tips for industrial fantasy type (steam) powered armour?
« on: April 18, 2012, 06:56:05 AM »
I've had an industrial fantasy related backburner project for some years now and I was thinking of maybe giving it a bit more steam over the summer.

So what I want would be tips for roughly-WARMACHINE-style steam(punk) style powered armour miniatures in ca. 28mm scale other than the stuff done by Privateer Press. Something like, say, Khador Man'o'wars. Am willing to look at VSF types as well.

I'm a bit of a fish out of water with fantasy stuff so I can think all of one that Reaper makes ("something-something Steampunk Hero" IIRC)...

One of my ongoing project is a large fantasy steampunk imperial warband so I've surfed the web a bit. What you have to decide first, in my opinion, is the "faction". Do you want a human gang? Or dwarves? Or pirates? Or elves?
If you are looking for a steampunk hero but not a PP one I would suggest this from Hasslefree:

They should be human in my case. Pirates optional if they are human pirates :P

Good call on the Hasslefree one, I didn't know about that. Shame it's a one-off, just like the Reaper guy.

The ape suits aren't bad but a bit too modern-looking, as are most other "big stonking armoured suits" I'm aware of. I wouldn't like to recommend too much conversion work however.

That's right but with some painitng/conversion skill you can use him as a hero to fit in your gang. What do you need exactly? I mean, how many basic troopers? wich weapons? how many and wich kind of hero do you need? warjacks?
In my warband I've got 5 arquebusiers 1 sergeant with a couple of pistols 3 hounds (WIP) 1 ogre armed with a cannon (WIP) and a converted khador 'jack. I'm actually preparing some melee fighters... I still need a techno-wizard...
If you wish you can check my gallery (here)

I'm not thinking along the lines of what I need really, but along the lines of what's available. But yes I would prefer more than just one pose since I'd like to be able to recommend these for a squad based game, with squad size of something like 4 to 10, usually maybe @ officer/hero + 4 troopers. And they should look like there is a guy inside or at least like a guy could fairly easily fit inside, so no golems/jacks/constructs as such at this time. Carrying some sort of firearm would be a big plus to have since these are for an industrial fantasy setting - you don't bring a knife into a clockwork rifle fight after all, unless it's a magic knife :P

As for techno-wizards, might one of the Saints from the Dark Age Games Forsaken line work (they also have a single pose "heavy" Saint, Luke, that would fit my needs except for having a bit too techy gun)?

Cygnar Stormsmith?

mean these?

Pretty cool indeed, but I need a more reinassance style. Maybe I could make a conversion. Thanks for the idea :)

@tnjrp: I see. The only squad that could fit your needing is the Khador Manowar for what I know. I think you should think to a great kitbashing&conversion. Dark Age minis are really cool and there is more than one that could be nice to represent a hero. On the other side they are post apoc and they would need some work too to become fantasy steampunk.

Shadowsea Fortune Hunters are supposed to be guys in armoured diving suits but this guy isn't actually at all bad for a steam armour ground trooper either. The only absolutely necessary conversion needed would be to clip off the harpoon:
http://shadowsea-game.blogspot.de/2012/04/painted-fortune-hunter-deep-soldier.html

They also have a bigger support armour type but it looks to be shaping into more like an old style diving suit so it's a little less desirable. And of course neither mini is available just yet AFAIK.

For a cruder look (and one involving dwarves) you can loook at the mage knight figure "Steam Tinker".

Wrath of Kings, the not-Confrontation-remake-at-all game upcoming from CMON looks to have potential to offer a few steampowered armour suits somewhere down the line - unless they go for the constructs only route which has traditionally been more popular.

Speaking of Confrontation, there are quite a few steam powered looking suits in the Dwarf range.
OOP now, I know, but you could ask on the Bazar and trawl ebay, they are still about somewhere.
