Mr. Bullshotte,

Would you please tell me about the red jacketed lancers? Are they kit bashed figures or something else?

The lancers belong to Dewbakuk. I'm sure he'll pop by and provide an answer :)

How about those Papal infantry? manufacturer/range?

I have some figures in 15mm that I was going to do up for Papal States, but I like your paint scheme better. may change mine now. Keep the Zouaves in the purple and gold, maybe.

Dewbakuk provided the papal troops and the Venetians. They are all on this thread:

Thank you all, it's nice to be appreciated :)
Life is a little hectic for me right now with a few real life problems but I will get the thread Malamute linked to updated when the figures have had their paint touched up.

In a quick run down though:

Venetians - the guys in blue with masks and berrets are North Star Pioneer Corp from the Africa range with new resin heads.
Papal Zouaves - are Perry Miniatures ACW Zouaves with new resin heads.
Papal Noble Guard Cavalry - are Perry Carlist War, Isabellino Line Cavalry with new lances and some putty work to give them masks and extend the 'comb' on the helmet slightly to match the one historically worn.

The spider has a few write ups on the forum, but one of the last posts in the thread Malamute linked to is about how it was made (another link invovlved). The two spiders can be seen on my flickr page too which is linked to in most of that thread.

The colour scheme for the Papal troops is based on the uniforms worn during the Unification Wars, but with some style thrown in :)
The zouaves were a real unit of foreign soldiers, primarily French, that formed the Pontifical Zouave regiments in defence of Rome. Their uniforms seem to be a dark grey/blue colour with red trim although all the shots of reenactors etc in Pontifical Zouave uniforms are definately dressed in blue for some reason. I went for black and red as I didn't want them to look like Confederate troops and black and red are the colours I think of when I think of Catholicism, besides, it's looks great as a combo  ;)
So many projects..... so little time.......

Thanks, Malamute!

And a huge thank you to Dewbakuk.

I had been watching that thread and the Spiders slipped under the radar!
(Is it me, or do they Scream 'Tie- Bomber'?)
I was wondering exactly how to paint the front of my Japanese walkers and you have nailed it for me.
You will understand when I (finally!) get around to them.
Thank you very much!

Thanks for the reply Dewbakuk. That is some really nice work you are doing. Also, I did not know that these guys were based on historical units. Thanks for the info.

No problem, it's quite an interesting period of the 19th century as all the Italian states had their own uniforms etc. They're only loosely based on the historical units, the Noble Guard for example never saw combat and pretty quickly ran out of horses which led to the modern day situation where they still exist (as a ceremonial unit) but are on foot and act as escorts to processions. I like finding actual historical units to base VSF stuff on as it gives them a bit of 'grounding' and supplies you with a good starting point.

The Venezian Marines for example have no real basis in history other than the fact the Venetian navy had marines. However their masks and colour scheme etc are all based on real venetian styles which works in the same way.

Dewbakuk, I'm sure that someone asked you on the other thread, but are you offering the gasmask resin heads for sale at all? They'd be very useful for my Dutch.

I will be, currently I only have the mold I've been using and it's not realistic to cast too many from it as it would take forever. I do need to talk to a couple of people about selling them but yes, they will be available. I've already had one member request around 50 when I get them up and running :)

Awesome! Keep us informed. I'm taking a little break from VSF at the moment so no rush  ;)
