Golden Age of Air Racing - HMGS Little Wars 2012
« on: May 01, 2012, 04:43:37 AM »
Last weekend I attended the Little Wars convention in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and ran my Golden Age air racing game on both Friday and Saturday. We played two races each day and had a lot of fun. Blown engines, overstressed airframes and the enthusiastic use of high throttle settings (and the resultant high consumption of limited fuel) ensured that several aircraft in each race had to be listed as 'Did Not Finish', but that all just added to the fun. The rules used were Dave Schueler's Golden Age Air Racing, downloaded from the Air Pirates Yahoo group. Planes are 1/144 scale, which I modeled and had printed through Shapeways. Race pylons are scratch built.

I was wondering what had happened to these.  :)

It must have been a really fun game to play and I still love the planes.

My 7yo son was looking for a game on Saturday afternoon, and the table full of adults graciously welcomed him.  He seemed to pick up the rules just fine, and ended the race in first place...

..before running out of fuel just short of the finish line!  It was a fantastic game!

I downloaded the rules yesterday, and intend to pick up some of the models.  I think my group will really enjoy it as well.

Thanks again!

I can't think of a higher recommendation for our oft-derided hobby being inherently healthy.

Inspirational looking game.
Might have to try this one at school.

Do you have a link for the Shapeways shop that features these aircraft? I'm thinking of running only "sports" games at an upcoming local convention, and since we're in Cleveland (home of the Thompson Cup races of the 30's), air-racing would be a natural.

http://www.shapeways.com/shops/arcticskunk. There was a vendor at the convention who makes laser cut wooden terrain items, and I spoke to him about making a race pylon kit. As soon as I hear from him I'll post the information, in case there's any interest.

At a recent gaming convention I saw both sides of this. At some tables there were fully involved children and at others, barely supervised children that the various other adults had to help. Still, I think that in general children at gaming conventions are great.

The pictures bring back fond memories.  The late British gamer, Robin Hunt, a good friend of mine for many years, created a similar game using 1/32nd scale models.  The planes, by Williams Bros. here in the US, are now in the "sought after" collectors' realm.  We would trade, I'd send kits over to him, and he's send me figures.
