I watched 'The Twilight Samurai' the other day (very good film) and was inspired to make a lower class samurai house similar to one featured in the film.

I usually try and get stuff done before posting but this is probably going to be long term as I'm making the interior as well as taking time on the exterior.

The main house construction is done along with the main external timbering. The main roof will be a hipped thatch and the projecting roof will be wooden with a gable. I'm even toying with the idea of lighting it using yellow LEDs kept in the roof.

The windows and doors will be typical shoji (paper) and these will allow the light to come through

The house is on a slight rise as it will be near a river and this would help to prevent flooding.

More to follow in the coming weeks and if all goes well ill make a middle class samurai home and who knows, maybe even a rich one

It looks very delicate, Jim. But in a good way.

What will make it a low ranking samurai's house? Is that restricted to size, decoration?

Great start to the house Jim.

Is the Twilight samurai movie the one where his wife has died and he looks after the kids?He also has a fight using a wooden sword if I remember correctly.Good film if it is the one I am thinking of.Watched it years ago.

After watching Thirteen Assassins I would love to do a village set-up like in the movie.

Christian, all samurai that belonged to a clan had a stipend of a certain amount, referred to as koku (one koku was a value that was determined by the amount of rice that would keep one man for a year). It generally wasn't literal but was only a way of determining a value etc. this house is for a 40-60 koku samurai.

Manic, that is the same film

'The Thirteen Assasins' is quite enjoyable but the village at the end has a slight touch of whimsy to it and probably isn't 100% historically accurate although all the basic elements are right.

Nice 'clean' start! Any time I do anything I need to cover it polyfilla and green stuff to hide mistakes, but yours are always soo precise!

I saw the Twilight Samurai a few years ago. It was a great movie.
Your building is really doing the film justice.
