Bolsheviks in Space stop motion animation
« on: May 14, 2012, 08:47:06 PM »
Here is an amazing inspiring stop-motion animation film from 1924!!

(note to mod. I'm not sure if linking this is allowed for the use of symbols, but since it's a piece of real vintage bolshevik agitprop I suppose it should be okay?)

Revolution, probably. From an art history point of view, this is actually in line with the Communist artwork of the time. Then, after Stalin took over, Social-realism kicked in and a lot of the avant-garde abstract artists ended up fleeing the Soviet Union.

Yep -- Comrade, thank you for your service to the Revolution, but Comrade Stalin flipped out after he watched your movie and had to be talked off of the ceiling...you are now an enemy of the state...[RACK-RACK]

Constructivist and expressionist works from the time are truly amazing in fact. I've seen a documentary once about a propaganda art train that cruised through the entire soviet union to show the revolution to people and have them participate. Painters, sculptors, filmmakers. The project was cancelled at a certain point because the artists were too radical and far out for the Bolsheviks, iirc.

So apparently this animation was shown before 'Aelita' at the theaters. http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aelita_%28film%29

Shortly after most avant garde artists had to leave or submit to central committee regulations on art. Most were probably prosecuted in the end, during the purge.
