Project South
« on: 25 May 2012, 08:13:23 AM »
We've bit the bullet, some of the boys at the club and I.

Rather than each start on a 3rd Napoleonic 28mm army, we've agreed to commence a AWI project focused on the Carolina campaign and specifically Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse.

We'll be using Black Powder for rules.

My intention, rather than just invest in a large pile of lead, is to buy and paint a 24 man unit at a time. I'm probaby looking at Front Rank although i've not discounted Perry. Nor Galloping Major, if i opt for the Militia.

The problem is, my head is with the Loyalists, my heart the Patriots ...

For AWI, a very nice campaign to go for. Difficult decision, which to go for, which way are your chums leaning?

We have an ardent Royalist and a fervent Patriot  lol. The others are wavering or finishing off their own projects

I was looking at the right-hand side of the Loyalists at Guilford i.e. Hessians, Jaegers, Highlanders, Guards and Tarleton (as i don't want simply another "Red-Coat" army). Then i read on TMP that's its a power gamer's dream .. [sigh]

I'd be doing about 8 x battalions of infantry if Royalist. More than that if i opted for Patriots

Choices, choices

Which ever side you go for I would recommend Front Rank as they have almost the complete range of figures plus they are consistant in size, you can order

I am playing in an AWI game at Historicon in July and am currently painting up a command stand with Washington, and aide and a foot soldier. The figures are a mix of FR, WI Washington (free with subscription) and a Foundry foot slogger. I do have the Foundry pack of Continental Commanders but they are smaller and thinner in stature than the FR.

If you cannot choose.... why not just alternate?
One loyalist then one patriot?
That should give you the chance to play for both teams.
(oo-er sounds a bit euphemistic)

An excellent idea my dear fellow with only one, tiny, infinitesimally small, flaw ..  ;)

Good news gentlemen.

We're doing Cowpens and Guilford.

I can start to collect "militia", Tory or otherwise, and hedge my bets  :D

Mind you, one of my smart-ar*e mates in the club  :) is trying to tell me that Tory Militia wore green coates. Red i would have thought if anything. I shall play my colour-blind card if he's not careful

I think "civvies" may be in order regardless

How about a double bluff and go with civvies in mostly green and terracotta brown jackets?

There were indeed Loyalist units in green coats, perhaps the most famous of them being the King's Royal Regiment of New York. There were also Loyalist units in red etc. etc.

I would pick a battle and build on the oob of that battle to be honest. Before doing that though you need to decide which of the AWI campaigns you want to game as the uniforms differed sometimes quite dramatically (mind you if you are gaming with mates I am sure they wouldn't mind if for eg. you game Saratoga with units in tricorns and long tailed coats).

I never cease to be amazed at your capacity for hard work - painting yet another period.

Did any Indians take part in this arena??????

I have just read the article about the battle so I can now answer my own query - there doesn't seem to be a native contingent involved.

That's a downright shame!!
