Redcoats with tricornes/bicornes
« on: February 08, 2008, 01:34:29 PM »
Where should I look for the nicest redcoats (same style as those used in the LotHS-book)?

I can see that the 'grenadier-style' marines are from Old Glory - may have to buy some of those with a brigantine this spring....

I Believe you will find the grenadier type marines are infact ours, if you are thinking of the mitred hatted troops. The tricorn/Bicorne hats were a much later inclusion missing the goldern age of piracy by about 30 years. Front ranks figures are beautiful though.

If you are going for Pirates in the golden age look for Marlburian Soldiers, the Front Rank ones are very nice

However if you dont work about history too much you need to look for 7 years war figures at the latest. Bicornes are more American revolution and Naopleonic.

I was indeed thinking of the mitre-capped boys in red. I did not realize they were yours (Old Glory does some very similar, though).

I know about the redcoats, but I'm thinking 'Pirates of the Carribean' here. When it comes to 'pulp historical' gamiong, I'm bot too fuzzy about historical correct minis - and redcoats just look NICE on the table

And as long as even European television companies keep using re-enactment guys i early Imperial gear for the Punic wars and the Spartacus revolt, when we all know they should look different, I won't be upsetting too many people, I think

Trent Miniatures have some nice tricorne wearing figures but almost impossible to get hold of. Northstar Nick might be able to get them.

Another option would be Under The Bed Enterprises, they have a variety of figures including rebels/mobs with improvised weapons.

Eureka makes some nice ones here in there AWI range (including some ragged figures).

They are the same height as Foundry but a bit slimmer.

What size are your other figures, Argonor?  The Front Rank guys in the low cloth grenadier/fusilier caps are fantastic, but are very big and bulky.  If you are gaming with smaller figures, the Foundry British fusilier/grenadier/marine figures work, though without the variety of pose of the Front Ranks.  Old Glory are cheap, medium sized, and the figures are lively.  Dixons are medium to tall, but not nearly as bulky as the Front Ranks, and the Dixons look good.

All of those companies make good British marine figures, which are basically the same as most British grenadiers except for those who wore tall miter type hats.  But I'd suggest you skip the tricorne hats for the other guys and go with Dixon War of the Grand Alliance and Foundry "Early Marlburians" because those have figures in the floppy style of the late 17th Century.

For more costume inspiration, watch the movie "Rob Roy."

I go for 28 mm +/- a tad.

I've seen Rob Roy several times (I have a thing for Scotland, Feilidh Mor, and single malt whisky), and the style is right for the period.

I do not mind mixing periods a bit for the 'Hollywood/pulp'-style pirate games, though, and I really like redcoats in tricornes  :)

I'll see what I gan get together - with my painting speed, it will take quite som time to get ready for my first skirmish, anyway  :freak:
