Little Monkey and Demon Monkey (now available 5.11.2012)
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:49:39 AM »
I wasn't really sure where to put this, so I chose the workbench, as it is not a wargaming project in the narrow sense, and  I'm most at home around here :D

Some days ago, I was given a mold for a monkey skull by Vikotnik. As he told me, the skull itself was prepared for molding some years back by Admiral Benbow (must be quite some time, as I have seen it used in a Golden Demon Diorama, back in those days when I occasionally bought the White Dwarf). I took a few castings of it, and got to work...

The cheekbones were missing, so I had to rebuilt them from wire and putty:

Lots of detail on the underside as well. Too bad it will rarely be seen.

Texture and detail are really beautiful, so the skull almost painted itself. All I did was a few brown washes and a drybrush in an off-white colour. Picked out the teeth and the cranial sutures, and I was done. So here is Little Monkey:

And since I couldn't stop myself, I converted a second casting a little bit. The forehead was changed to give it an evil look, and the teeth were completely resculpted into carnivore teeth. So Little Monkey became Demon Monkey:

Sizewise, the skulls are not too big, something like 10 x 7 cm, and 5 cm high. Here is scale comparison to one of the LAM minis:

Unfortunately, the original mold has been damaged, but if there is sufficient interest, I'd make a new one, of either Little Monkey or Demon Monkey, or both. So please let me know if you want one 8)

Thanks, people!

Belgian, I'd need 5 people for each version to make the mould worthwhile. At the moment it looks good that the sufficient number will be reached shortly 8). Which one are intereested in?

I don't know what Vikotnik did with this skull, but I used it (and another one) to cast my own moulds and built this diorama from the castings for the Metal Magic Calendar in 1992:

Yikes! Now that is one morbid skull canyon! I can tell the two different skulls - I take it the rest is sculpted, or did you use some bones as well?

The diorama I mentioned was from Michael Jacobsen, done in the late 90ies, called Kemmlers Workbench or something. I think he gave the skull to Karsten afterwards, who dug it out recently for his Pyrate project (I think).

Here is another shot with some details pics. I made a kind of bone wall segment from tiny mice bones I'd collected from owl pellets found in the woods and made another mould from it; the castings were used several times in the structures. Everything else was sculpted from DAS Proto clay and other self-hardening putties. Yes, it was much fun, and I was very much inspired by the Giger Alien films and his paintings.

Ooops, missed this thread...

The diorama I mentioned was from Michael Jacobsen, done in the late 90ies, called Kemmlers Workbench or something. I think he gave the skull to Karsten afterwards, who dug it out recently for his Pyrate project (I think).

As far as I remember Michael I. gave me (Michael J.) one of his castings and Karsten made another mould, cast some skulls for my project and kept the mould in his vault...
Well, here you go...
