I'm rather fond of the Feldherr cases for transport.

And for storing at home I like these kind of things. (From IKEA, I am a Swede after all!)

Here is a variety of methods my friend and I store things....

We use foam to transport models around, pretty much like GW makes but there are several companies that make them. We order them and then go buy plastic container/totes that hold the trades but allow you to put your hands in easy enough. Here in the US we found the ideal plastic box at Freds....we found two sizes...one held about 3-4 foam trays (less if you put books or vehicles on top) and a larger that held about 9 or so trays. GW usually sells them 3 for $20, there is one company that sells 5 for $50. The plastic containers are like $5 or less.

We also go to Michael's, Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart, they sell these hobby trays that can hold several figures in them. You can cut some padding and add it to the case if you want. Cost for these boxes are $2. Typically used for bead storage and such.

I have also found the $10 gun cases at Wal-Mart and own some of those.

If you shop at a tool store like Lowes or Home Depot sometimes in their tool area there is a padded cases that my friend got for pick and pluck. I bought some of the same cases that did not have the foam and was able to put my vehicles in side by side and added my own padding (namely egg crate).

My buddy loves his tool chest. Another guy I know has a metal one and puts magnets on the bottom of his figures. They don't slide or move as he transports them.

At Ikea I found a great storage box that has multiple slots that allows me to custom it out to my needs by removing spots. Add some padding and I can carry things there. Typically I just store stuff with it. Even when I take it with me I tend to keep it upright. I think the box was just a few bucks.

When I think about it I will post pics...
