Anti-aircraft guns.
« on: 18 February 2008, 10:45:47 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a manufacturer out there who does anti-aircraft gun for this period in 28mm?

If not has anyone done a conversion or adaption from a existing artillery gun? and if so how did they do it and what did they use?

Failing that perhaps Company B would like to have a go?

Perhaps not quite what you have in mind, but The London War Room does Lewis Guns on AA mounts. One suspects that would be the most common form of AAA in the 'Back of Beyond.'

I was thinking more anti-aircraft artillery i.e the British 3' gun or the german 75mm.

It might be a bit small, but Reverisco has this model:

Anenthusiastic scratchbuilder could use this info for a start point:

If you're not averted to some scratchbuilding, an anti-aircraft gun is pretty easy to build. I did a 3-inch gun for a ship I recently built; the gun is made up of a couple plastic tubes, brass rod, small block of basswood (for the breach) a couple pieces of plasticard and a couple hand-cranks (from some GW orc bits I think.)

Here's a couple pics of the gun assembled but not painted (so you can see how the parts went together.) It shouldn't be too difficult to modify a base and elevate the gun to be used vs. aircraft.

Hope that helps :)

A very easy conversion for a mobile AA gun is to take Co B's Ford Armored pickup take out the mg and put in one of Houstons ship guns with mount

The 20cwt 3" is not an impossible build. The sighting arrangement is a little complex but simplified it's easy enough to knock one up with plasticard, tubing and some bits from the spares box. You could mount one on a J- Type Thorneycroft from Sloppy Jalopy or do what I did and convert a Lledo diecast.  There's a Military Modelling Annual from 1978 that has a great series of drawings. IIRC the Lndships site now has some too

If you want a good way to cheat on the barrel and get a very good approximation I'd suggest you get a Minfigs 4.7" naval gun from their 15mm Colonial range, it scales out nicely for a 3" in 28mm. The 25mm version is also useful for other projects.

The easier alternative is to buy a suitable 18pdr or 13 pdr and mount the barrel on a simple pedastal and fit to teh back of a truck for the 13/18pdr AA gun.

Eureka also do a 3 pdr naval gun. During the war the RNAS had a number of tenders fitted with this gun, they served as an AA battery in and around London and the south coast.
