Back from Ropecon...
« on: July 29, 2012, 10:50:23 PM »
"Ropecon [ropekon] is Finland's biggest roleplaying convention, with more than 3.700 visitors each year. Ropecon offers a variety of programming and activities covering the width and breadth of the hobby gaming field, including tabletop and live action roleplaying games, board games, miniatures and collectible card games."

So, I just came back from there. Most likely I'll be the slowest and laziest reporter of them all again, but here are some preview pics.

We did a bit of this...

...and some of this...

...and of course, plenty of this.

All in all, good time. More later (or much later, sorry).  :)

Thanks for commenting! :D

Yep, the Carnevale table is mine as well (partially, mostly, whatever). We dug up the old Hirst Arts church and cobblestones, built a few canal side bases, and then painted some Manorhouse buildings. Finally, generic resin goods were added for flavour and gameplay. Currently the city is fairly flat grey, but I'll probably add some colour and details later. I think it's completely playable already, though.

Strangely enough, I played my very first game of Carnevale there. Is it normal to finish a city before testing the game in practice? Joonas (the chap with glasses on the right) provided the minis and arranged the demo games. I heard it was well received and constantly occupied. My CoC stuff alternated between quiet breaks and up to ten player adventures.

It's fun indeed, but not something you'd like to set up every week or even month in that scale...

So you took a bunch of stuff you had laying around and made a really nice gaming table that everyone would love to play on?

I hate you.  ;D

Gorgeous display! Man, that little town has to be the very worst place to be and investigator - you can barely walk five paces without running into a dark young, star spawn, Spawn of Yog-Sothoth, some huge worm thing, or even ol' Cthulhu himself.

Btw., I always enjoy seeing an Otherworld miniature!

Hello, and thanks once again. It's been a heavy weekend so the answers will be short.

Aggro: Hey, I worked through my last week of holidays to get that table finished for the convention. It's as close to "everyone playing" (having a chance) as you can get in this country. Don't hate me. ;)

Alfrik: It depends...the least shaky pic is probably in What I painted in June 2010. (I really should get a dedicated photographer for these games. Typically I'm way too busy with GMing and so tightly stuck in some spot behind the table that my attempts of good in-game close-ups always fail.) But I'd say that's a prime example of a miniature which does not require a close-up to be seen. ;D

Kim: What you see is mostly from a trailer/spoiler situation at the end of the game where most groups have already legged it. The scenario starts peacefully from an empty table and advances with easy cultist encounters. However, when big secrets get discovered, there's sort of built-in incentive to run with the treasure (if you're lucky) and end the game. You can't linger in there forever, no matter how many sticks of dynamite you manage to find.

My photos are still untouched. I blame Twilight Imperium and its "long war" variant...
