Dux Britanniarum base size?
« on: August 04, 2012, 02:53:16 AM »
So, I got myself the advance order of Dux Britanniarum!  So far I only have the pdf, but the hardbound rules are in the mail system somewhere.

I dug out my collection of arthurian and saxon miniatures, and am trying to decide on what bases to use.  I would like to use round bases, but am not sure if 20mm or 25mm would work better.  The figures I am using are a mix of foundry, GB, and BTD.

I was thinking these might work well:

Any suggestions?

Base size is not an issue, either would suit. The only suggestion would be to use a different base shape/size to differentiate your Big Men - the suggestion is a hex base which Warbases make in packs of 18 IIRC. Warbases also make Movement trays suited to Dux Brit.

Yeah, I figure the actual size is not an issue, more of what looks/works better with the scale.  I was thinking of using the figures for SAGA as well at some point, but I guess the bases arent critical for that either (except for your warlord...)

Thanks for the tip on warbases.  There are so many different sites, I had not seen that one yet.  I had been looking on 4ground and fenris.  Any other manufacturers of mdf bases and trays you might recommend apart from warbases?

Also, on their website for the dux britanniarum bases:

Are the actual bases included, or is that just a movement tray?  I am still not sure on the actual size of the bases, whether they are 20 or 25mm...

Not really. I have ordered the hex bases for BM and the DB movement trays (in various sizes) but intend to use steel washers for actual bases. I have those in approx 1p & 2p sizes. I will then magnetize the movement trays to help with stability when moving them around the table (and transporting them).

My stuff is on UK pennies which are about 20mm and the Nobles on 2p pieces which are about an inch.  May pal Sid bases his on inch bases and they are fine too.  We happily use both on the same table.  Personally I prefer the smaller base and then I use Warbases movement trays.

Well, that makes sense now that 1p and 2p are the british coins.  Didn't know you folks across the pond used currency as a basing material  :D

Here in Canada, our penny is just under 20mm, and we don't have a 25mm coin.  Wikipedia tells me that the 2p coin is 25.9mm, so if I get the 2p warbases trays, I should be able to fit 25mm bases without a problem.

I think I like the look of the 25mm rather than 20mm bases.  Leaves a bit more room for basing details and such...

Hi Timbor,

They are cheaper than buying washers!  I have a pot on my desk and every few days I just take the bronze coins out of my pockets, I never have to worry about having basing material as so much stuff is sold for 99p I've nearly always got a pile of odd pennies.

I reckon leaving an extra 0.9mm would be a good fit, gives them a bit of wriggle room.
