What color for Prussian Vehicles?
« on: 15 August 2012, 06:16:45 AM »
Anyone have a suggestion for what color Prussian/German aeronefs and walkers would be?  THe British tended to paint boats and such white, the Americans used dark blue and gray, my Norwegians are a earthy blue...should I use gray, or green, or what?  I can't find any images that help me here.

German ships in WWI tended to be painted a light mid-grey.

My VSF vehicles are painted like artillery, so my British are a light blue-gray.  My Prussians are a darker, blue-er gray.

No, I was not trying to be funny, my suggestion is paint them the same dark blue as per Prussian uniforms.

It would certainly make them different from the normal grey/white colour choices.

My VSF vehicles are painted like artillery gray.

That's why my Yank vehicles are green... though my aeronef is white and tan, as was the navy.

The darker blue gray was my selection for my Norwegians, but I like the idea of the really dark blue, or black...

Hmm...well, here we go!

Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Around the 1860's, 1870's, and 1880's, prime VSF time, many of the German cruisers were painted dark, probably black. Later, those on overseas duty in the tropics were painted with white hulls. See these images for German cruisers:

http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/cruisers1.htm

Early German ironclad battleships in the 1860's and 1870's were also dark, probably black. Later in the 1890's German battleships sent overseas might have white painted hulls, as with cruisers in the tropics, or might be painted light grey. See the following images:

http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/battleships1.htm

On a side note, up until WW1 the Austro-Hungarian battleships were painted a very dark green, while the Italians were painted a dark blue. At the outbreak of WW1 both those navies repainted their ships a very light grey. If you add those navies to your VSF collections, you will have other historical color options.

German high seas torpedo boats were painted black through WW1. See the following images:

So British ships in black wouldn't be copied to early 'nefs?

British ironclad steam battleships (which also had sails) of the 1870's had hulls that were painted black. British cruisers of the 1870's had hulls that were sometimes painted black, and sometimes painted white. I think the difference was whether or not the cruiser was stationed in the tropics or in East Asia. White hull paint was favored there. The same was true for the Germans. Take a look at the paint schemes of the various British Royal Navy battleships and cruisers by clicking on either battleships or cruisers on the below link, and then clicking on the name of individual ships or classes. Images, often multiple images, will come up with the individual ship or class:

http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/royal.htm

Here are some images of pre-dreadnought paint schemes:

The War Times Journal, a prominant perveyor of 1:3000 scale predreadnoughts, has a painting guide online here:

http://www.wtj.com/store/guide_paint.htm

Hope those links help.
