perry napoleonic russian alternative uses
« on: August 17, 2012, 08:07:11 AM »
Hello all, I plan in the future to get some of the Perry Russian plastic Napoleonic line, to use the forage caps on some hanoverian and dutch militia conversions, but I was wondering what could I use the infantry for?

The early kiwer shako is very distinctive, and I could only find evidence of the Swedish also using it, is this correct and did anybody else?

Is the later shako much different from any other nations in terms of size?, specifically the brunswicks shako.

I'm not a button counter, and neither are those I game with, so it doesn't have to be a perfect fit, just a general "if painted right from 3 feet away will look like xxx" army

Hi. I'm not the greatest specialist, but I've checked Funcken and I think some Prussian troops (post-1806) are closest to the Russian ones. Two rows of buttons, some regimenst have the large plumes, and the bedrolls. Most do not have the braid on the front of the shako, but some Jaeger regiments do (and perhaps some others in parade uniform).  However, you should do something with the 'Mosquito trousers' I see on the Perry picture (the trouser-gaiters, I know - barring the Russians - only of their use in the tropics by British and Dutch troops). The prussians wore high boots or boot-high gaiters. I think you can quite easily modify that with a little green stuff or cutting.

Swedish line infantry also comes reasonably close.

Some swedish troops used the russian kiwer in 1814 as the looted them or traded them to be more top of the art, but it wasn´t regular. After the Napoleon wars the swedish adopted a hat looking very much as a kiwer before switching to a prussian style helmet.

Might partially depend on the heads.
The ACW ones have seperate hats rather than seperate heads, but the zouaves and ansar have heads with hats attached (or turbans and hair for ansar).
You might be able to blend in some Victrix heads for variety.

What heads have you got from the Hanoverian/Dutch figures that you are converting to militia?

My first 48 dutch militia I used victrix peninsular British heads (does the trick from 3 feet away in blocks), my third unit of 24 is warlord games Prussian landwehr with no conversion.

My two hanoverian I'll use the Perry British line bodies with Perry Russian forage caps.
