New Space 1889 figs in the works from RAFM
« on: August 22, 2012, 01:25:57 PM »
Surprised to see no one's mentioned this over here - RAFM has started an Indiegogo project to pay for license renewal and new sculpts in their Space 1889 range, including some Martian wildlife:

http://www.indiegogo.com/RAFM1889Miniatures?contribution_success=true

The funding goal is fairly modest by crowdfunding standards ($18,890 - cutesy) and it's got 29 days to run yet, so there's plenty of time for budgets to recover from (say) the shock of the Reaper Kickstarter, or GenCon releases.  It's also got a real gem even if you're not a big VSF fan - the $56 support level gets you some minis, but it also gets you 40% off on every order from RAFM for a year.  That's an Old Glory Army level of discounting - you break even at $140, and if you can't find $140 worth of their figs in their catalog (which includes historicals, fantasy, 15mm and 28mm scifi, and of course the Call of Cthulhu range) you aren't looking very hard.  Only 99 slots left open at the discount level, so not everyone can take advantage of it, but it's still a nice option.

New one a re great but I still they would release the WHOLE old line. You can get some of the old line, but they have gaps.

I really hope they make their goal I would like some of the proposed minis. BaronVonJ what are they missing? I'm pretty sure the entire "old" line is available.

There are more Canal Martians. Specifically I miss the shield gunner.

Yeah, the boxed sets include the "missing" single figs.  Everything in the range is still currently available - but it won't be for long if the license doesn't get renewed, so backing would be a good idea if you want to keep the option to buy them.

It's worth mentioning that the Space 1889 books are still in print (and pdf) and have been for years, courtesy of Heliograph:

Add in the Savage Worlds 1889 book that came out recently and the setting is really seeing quite a bit of interest lately.

How would these figures scale with current VSF and colonial lines, such as Hinterland, Brigade, Empress, etc?

They work pretty well as far as scale goes. They would be on the smaller side. They work well with foundry and some of the OG stuff. The Martians are bigger and mix very well the majority of the VSF stuff that's available.

What's this about the license needing to be renewed? I haven't seen anything beyond conjecture. In fact, Mr. Chadwick has always given me the impression of being more than happy to keep and expand licenses.

RAFM themselves say it needs to be renewed on their Indiegogo page.

Right - makes me wonder if maybe someone else was thinking about doing some figs but can't due to exclusivity (which I can understand RAFM wanting to retain, assuming they've got it).  Pinnacle did that Savage Worlds 1889 book, and they've been fans of doing small minis ranges for years now - everything from Deadlands to Hell on Earth to 50 Fathoms.

Now, if Reaper were to license Space:1889 figures through Pinnacle's license....

I don't think that's the issue because somebody else (sorry I can't remember who) is producing new 15mm Space 1889 minis.
Doug, yes I did make my contribution. I really hope they are able to make some new minis. The RAFM Space 1889 stuff are some of my favorite minis of all time.
