yup, that is my back up plan....

Google Map? You can toggle "Satellite View" on if you want.  ;)

unless they've upgraded it I don't think it will give me the interior layout though....  ;)

Excellent....I start a Planet of the Apes thread, and on the first page you gits try to get me to start a Fallout and a Logan's Run project....

 lol

Yeah Matt, heaven forbid anyone try to side track you into another project..... (you'll do that to yourself in less than two pages....  lol).

Anyway back to the thread, any plans drawn up for your layout? Let's see your monkey boys then?

Has anyone got an idea of the layout of the Lincoln memorial (ie in terms of the placement of walls etc) ?

I'm probably going to have it at least partially collapsed but would be useful to have a vague idea - most photos are either from miles away, or just focussed upon the Abe statue...

You could always play Fallout 3  :D

Yeah, as soon as I posted, I realised you wanted the Lincoln Memorial and not the Washington Monument... Whoops!  ;D

Anyway, a quick Google search revealed these two:

Not the best, but I think it should just about be good enough to show the internal layout and elevations?

This site had a number of useful-looking drawings too.

Now, where are all the armed monkeys, astronauts and primitive humans?  :P

Ah, they look ideal for what I need - cheers !

 :)

@vyper - will stick up a sketch soon - tbh, this is already a sidetrack, as I'm supposed to be finishing the Vietnam terrain for the end of the month, but I carved the Washington monument while I was waiting for some resin water to dry....  :D

Ok, I've effectively binned my Vietnam boards, and will revisit that particular project another time, which means I can now focus upon building the Washington board.

I managed to get some work done this weekend on the basic shape of the table.

As mentioned elsewhere, I'm using smaller boards this time ie 450mm x 450mm.  There will be a total of 24 squares (think of 3x4 squares occupying the area of a 6'x4'6" table).

Some will be flat (F), some will be raised up (R), and some will be flat boards but on stilts to bring them up the the level of the raised ones (S).

           R R R
F F F F S S R
F F F F S S R
F F F F R R R

The reason for the height differential is due to a series of earthquakes (perhaps generated by the apocalyptic nuclear war 2000 years before) which caused some of the area of Washington DC to sink (ie the left hand side of the table).  This also conveniently provides an entrance to the tunnel system in the raised sections.

I'd originally thought about having "galleries" under a game board a year ago, when I was working on the WW1 Fantasy table, but didn't have time in the end to finish them.  At the time the tunnels were going to be additional pieces that the rest of the board would sit upon - the reason being that making them integral would give me boards that would be too bulky to store/move - I've got around this by using the smaller board size from the beginning (allowing me to hopefully fit them in my car...).

Pictures soon.

 ;)

Not very exciting - just a bunch of 12mm MDF currently.

The Raised sections - the gallery is visible on the righthand side of the picture - it runs the length of these sections, and is 150mm wide by 150mm high - various boards will house tunnels, a DC subway train, a secret bunker, and an Alpha Omega bomb.  Also a practical check to ensure that the Washington Monument will fit on top, while in my games room.....

Some sections may contain lighting.....possibly used by a sect of mutants living underneath the city.

A quick sanity check to ensure that the heights/lighting are what i want before i start working on it seriously.

My Galactica project will be light up with bright LEDs - too bright for this.  For the tunnels i'm using battery powered lights of the cheap Christmas variety.

Good luck that man!! ;)

Did you get any warp-age in your MDF boards?

 :D

No warp-age (so far) - I took your advice and made sure the squares are braced - the raised areas are supported by H- sections.  Currently wood-glued, soon to be reinforced with nails.  Hopefully the fact that the boards are smaller than what I'd usually make should also reduce any potential bend (or at least make it less noticeable).

I won't attempt to replicate your London board (I'd never have the patience or skill with a craft knife for starters), but you've certainly set the benchmark for any post-apoc table.

Cheers!

 :)

Now the games weekend has been and gone I can crack on with this project - next up is the Lincoln Memorial, so I hope to make some progress this coming weekend.  Still toying with whether to make it as a single piece of terrain, or in pieces that can be assembled....plusses and minusses for both.
