Favorite Lovecraftian Beasties...
« on: March 01, 2008, 01:56:55 PM »
As I've mentioned before I'm working (well, it's all over but the typesetting...) on a set of 28 mil. rules for 1920's Lovecraftian skirmish action. I need to keep myself busy 'till I see the finished thing and figured I could spend the time working on new monsters/baddies. To that end I would like all freaky weirdos who haunt this site to tell me about their favorite creatures in this vein. Not necesarily Lovecraftian monsters but any monsters from writings up to 1930.
Thanx in advance.

My big draw to Lovecraft was the madness he wrote into his works.  I always liked reading about how a normal Joe turn mad or even into something else by the corruption of the Elder gods and their influences.  The movie In the Mouth of Madness is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

Totally. Madness is worked into the campaign system. Got lots of great phobias for the good guys to get. How can you fight the unknown horrors of the mythos and not go a little potty?

This may sound silly, but what about the Whippoorwills? They were an integral part of several of HPL's stories.

LOVECRAFTIAN SPOILER ALERT: DON'T READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE DUNWICH HORROR (and would like to read it)  :)

I like the Dunwich Horror: Large, hulking twist of eyes, legs and tentacles with half a human face rampaging across the countryside. Oh, and it's invisible, so the model will be cheap

I also enjoy the great race of Yith.

As for Non-Lovecraftian, Lost World dinosaurs, King Kong, any creature from Mysterious Island, giant spiders-or any giant insect for that matter (yick!).

Mine's already been mentioned, the Deep Ones. I prefer the monster types that have civilisations because you can make them into armies. 8)

Got the Deep Ones, you can upgrade 'em with weapons and stuff...allowing you to use your favorite kind. Full on Fishman or degenerate Humanoid, whatever your blackened heart desires. Got ol' Whatley covered as well with a multi-buildable "Godling". I"ve got no idea about the "Whippoorwills" thou...which stories are they in? What are they, and how do they kill people...or whatever, scare people...Thanx guys, really appreciate the ideas!

'The Dunwich Horror', for one.  They are simply birds, whose call sounds like 'whip-poor-will', go figure! In this case, they start to gather, in their hundreds, as Wilbur Whateley is dying.  Their call gradually synchronises to his breathing and, when it finally stops, so do they.  It doesn't sound like much, but if you read the story (which I haven't, for at least 20 years), it is quite creepy.  They show up several times in HPL's writings, never as a major 'character', but they are there in the same sense as that 'something' you see out of the corner of your eye.  Just enough presence to freak you out!

Other than those mentioned above, for me its:

Hounds of Tindalos
Mi-go (Fungi from Yuggoth)
Spiders from Leng
Ghouls
Cthonians
Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath
They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

I have so many unpainted lovecraft Horrors.

Flying Polp
Shoggoth
Cythonian

They're all primed and based...Just want to get the color schemes set in my mind before I start work on them...if anyone has painted versions they are real happy with and want to show off, please do.

I'd love to see someone else's paint schemes.
