My Lost World Board under Construction
« on: 01 March 2008, 10:46:56 PM »
Well, maybe not as nice as Grimm's, but I am working on my dino hunt board for Cold Wars. Since I plan everything to run on 2'x2' boards, this is a stretch for me since this game will be run on a 3' x 6' board.

As always, I plan it so I can break it down into whatever configuration I want. The board is still under construction (like the cork edges needing some paint) so please keep that in mind.

First, the tiles before painting.

Second, the tiles with painting and some flock. And of course some river tiles. The seams will mostly be hidden by other terrain pieces so will not be as noticeable as they are right now. I also built a simple 1" high frame to go around the tiles so players won't have to worry about knocking them about.

And finally, a shot of a tree under construction.

And here's a shot with about 10% of the scenery down. It's a combination of some pieces from Grimm, some aquarium cliffs (the two close ones) and the rest is mine.

Nice work Richard.

Its portable which is a bonus. How much added terrain are you looking at for a 6'x3' board?

When I was on messenger to Lon yesterday he mentioned about your project and how you are not that far away from him.

God Bless

Best wishes,

Looks great, Richard! What rules will you be using for your hunt? I'll actually be partaking in some Tusk Sunday and Monday, but not on any board nearly as nice as that  :)

I'll be using the .45 Adventure rules and using the new supplement, Thrilling Expeditions: Valley of the Thunder Lizard.

I usually like a board well-covered with terrain. The players will be competing and that always means lots of shooting. The more cover they have, the better. Plus, they may want to get out of line of sight of some of the bigger dinosaurs once they get tagged for being eaten.

Originally my plan was to do them with cork and 1" thick insulation foam. Well, two stops at home improvement stores showed absolutely no 1" foam available (one place at a single sheet and it was beat to hell).

So, the second place I stopped at had 1/2". I picked up two 2' x 8' pieces of that.

I cut 1'x 1' sections out and glued those together with a 1' x 1' piece of corkboard on top. I stacked them all together, put some weight on top and let them dry overnight.

I undercut (diagonal) the foam with a hotwire cutter so that any non-straight cuts would be underneath the cork and not bulging out and causing a gap in the tiles.

For the river, I marked the cork with a marker and then pulled it up in a jagged pattern after it was glued. I then carved out the riverbed with a hooked sculpting tool and a heat gun.

Here's another shot with more scenics in place.

Very nice board Rich. I am looking forward to playing in the game at CW this Saturday. I'll have you know, because of you and Grimm I have already started to pick up some dinosaur figures.

Beautiful boards. I'm curious, why the cork on top? Most people I know just use the foam (sometimes with a stiffener like MDF on the bottom).

I added cork for two reasons.

1.) It provides a texture without having to put sand or anything down on the foam. This means anything I lay on the pieces will lay flat and not be slightly raised.

2.) When I tear into it for the rivers, I get a nice natural looking jagged edge.

As for MDF on the bottom. I don't need it. Because I glued 2 pieces of 1/2" foam together and added a layer of cork, there are two layers of glue. This creates a very rigid form.

And I promise plenty of pictures after this weekend.
