Havelock's column 1857
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:26:23 AM »
Hello,
I'm looking for the order of battle of Havelock's column including the troops brought by Major Renaud. I knew that the 64th, 84th and 79th regiments were present but have found nothing on the exact number of men.
Could anyone help, please ?  :)

Sorry, didn't read the question well and I had the book on my desk at work, so answered way too quick.  I will have another look when I get home. He also had two guns, but that is all it says.

I did find this:

Quote
Major Renaud moved on Cawnpore with 400 British, 300 Sikhs, 95 Irregular Cav, the faithful remnants of the 13 BNI & 3 Oude Irreg Cav and two guns.

The British in India 1825-59 by John French.  Out of print at the moment.  Picked mine up at a table top sale.

Neill had at length succeeded in equipping for the
march an advance column consisting of four hundred
European soldiers (Madras Fusiliers and Eighty-fourth),
three hundred of Brasyer's Sikhs, some troopers of
Native Irregular Cavalry, and a couple of 9-pounder
guns manned by invalid artillerymen from Chunar.
He had entrusted the command of it to Major Renaud
of his own regiment, a capable and zealous soldier,
with orders to advance on Cawnpore, inflicting as
he marched stern retribution on all suspected of guilty
complicity in mutinous designs. The
