South Carolina Zouave Volunteers.

Today I would like to present the latest regiment (acutally it was just a company) I recently finished: Hampton's Legion, Company H, the South Carolina Zouave Volunteers. The figures are Perry's splendid Civil War Zouaves, however slightly customized, i.e. I removed the ornamental elements on the jackets to match their historic counterparts. I also removed the jackets completely on three miniatures in order to add a little variety and re-arranged one figure as to create a casualty-marker. Flag is made by myself.

Wow, a fantastic unit.  I have never seen this unit in colour before and had to rush off and check Ron Field's book.  This is a great reconstruction of some very thin information.

Thin information indeed! Not even their flag survived and one has to rely on contemporary descriptions. I based my design on Glenn Dedmondt book "Flags of Civil War South Carolina". I read that their fez was actually grey inside and that it could be worn revearsed, subsequentially more diversity on the tabletop.

Well, when one of the foremost experts on SC uniforms can only put forward a general idea of what they might have worn based on the flimsy evidence surrounding fewer than a 100 uniforms made and none of which would have survived the wear and tear of 1861.....

Still a nice looking outfit, only the rest of Hampton's Legion to do then .......

Ron Field's two volume set on the history, uniforms and equipment are well-worth a look for then, along with the Osprey he did on Confederate uniforms of SC and Mississippi.

I agree, to my knowledge they are about the best reference material for early Sourth Carolina regiments. But as always, there might be more great sources out there I haven't heard about. Another interesting project would be the Palmetto Sharpshooters with their skull and cross-bones helmets.

Indeed, a really nice unit. 

I think if I ever did ACW again it would be 1861. Lots of unique uniforms to make a battlefield really stand out.

But at my age that is unlikely to happen so I urge you to do more for us old folks to enjoy.

Norman, it is a bit embarrassing, but I am fairly new to the pastime of wargaming. In fact, I have not seen action more than three times thus far. Those battles were fought according to the "Bull Run To Gettysburg" rule set.

Though my fingers are itching to get back into the fury of battle I plan to bulk out the forces a bit first. My aim is to have eight regiments of infantry, one regiment of cavalry and a battery of artillery for each side. So far the artillery and five infantry regiments each are done (well, almost ... for some reason I thought it was a good idea to base my first four regiments on 20mm x 20mm bases, hence there is also some re-basing to do.)
