converting 1/48th gloster meteor, barrel extentions
« on: 09 October 2012, 12:05:35 PM »
This morning I picked up a 1/48 tamiya gloster meteor with V-1 rocket for £4 from a local charity shop, never touched all in bags (bargain), however I want to convert it for wargaming in sci-fi settings (40k in mind), I want to extend the barrels using brass or alluminium replacements, which using brass pikes as a guide are about 1mm thick (others may have more experience with this measurement), what guns and scale should I be looking into to fit this size, or close enough to?

If this is for 40K, forget about accurate measurements; get your hands on the widest, shortest barrels you can find, stick them under the wings in the most non-aerodynamical way possible and add about 20.000 rivet heads.

Paint in an eyesearing 'camouflage'scheme, add some semi-fascist markings, preferably including many stylised eagles, and call it a night... :D
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

...And designate it a Violator or some other appropriate name.
from Mr.Vampire: "It's the paintjob that makes the miniature fight harder not the size."

Yeah I don't like the whole ugly oversized weapons look of 40k for my custom models.

Then again; without 40King it up, you could look at the cannons on Hawker Typhoons and/or the antitank gunpods of middle to late war Stuka's; they might fit the bill...

And if you want them to be turned brass, check out this guy:

Ahh cool, so if I was to choose for example 1/48 scale guns to fit a 1mm hole am I looking at 30-50 cal machine guns?, in reality I know it had 20mm cannons, but I doubt they will fit in the end of the barrel hole

Obviously the smaller the scale the bigger the gun I could make fit, but from the common scales what seems likely, these will be representing heavy stubbers or very light autocannons

After looking around the net do people think these would be thin enough?, they certainly have the look I'm after, but the thicker end looks dubious, not that I mind altering the hole too much

Try something like a Su152 barrel as it has a massive muzzle brake, and mount in the nose like the Germans mounted a 50mm cannon in a few Me262s. Dont forgot to add lots of rivets, pipes, hoses etc to make it less aerodynamic.

Cheers
