Hey guys. Thought I'd throw up a link to my solo Song of Blades and Heroes campaign. A word of warning to purists: I game with Lego minifigs :O

Thanks for looking! I'll be posting the next scenario or two hopefully this week. Busy work week and my free time has been consumed with painting terrain.

Lego gaming is all the dogs bollocks.

I have to ask though, is it really any fun to do solo gaming?

I usually play a few games solo to learn the rules, so that I can explain them to someone quickly. Sometimes they're fun, but nowhere near as interesting as playing against another person for sure.

I think it is. It's primarily a time issue for me. I have a time-consuming career as well as a young family. I usually don't get a chance to game until after 9pm. To me, and I know this will turn some people off, solo gaming feels kind of like playing a video game...a really fun video game that I created and invested in...or something. I like to play scenarios that I think will be difficult for me with a clear objective and only a basic idea of what could happen (similar to running an instance/raid in an MMO or something). I try to keep it interesting with the use of the random tables etc mentioned in the blog. I would love to have a group to play with, but even if I did, I'd probably still play solo.

Frankly, and I don't mean to sound hateful or like an elitist jerk, another reason to sologame has been the local gamers that I've met. Not impressive individuals. There is a really nice game shop in town that I've visited at different times to observe different games being played that I was interested in. Not once have I met anyone that I would want to spend any amount of time with. The body odor and general lack of hygene alone at the gaming tables was enough to make me want to leave. Most of the people that I observed took tabletop gaming way too seriously for my tastes. That's fine and good for them, but I have no desire to play with people who flip their lids when they lose or spend an hour arguing over line of sight. It's supposed to be fun. On my last saturday afternoon visit, I talked with a guy who had his 5 year old son there with him. I have son about the same age and thought "Hey this guy looks normal and smells like he took a shower today. I'll visit some with him!" However, I then watched him make his son sit on the floor for a couple of hours while he gamed. The poor kid was miserable. Dad snapped at him anytime the kid asked a question and everyone else in the room just seemed annoyed that the kid was even there. I just wanted to take the little boy home and let him play with my kids. That was enough for me. I kind of gave up looking.

Are there great gamers out there? Absolutely! This forum is a great example of that. I just haven't met any locally. And so, I solo game :D

I see where you are coming from.

Personally, apart from during game testing I think I would rather not play at all before playing solo games. To me, completely subjectively, the social aspect is integral to gaming.

I must have been lucky with the people I've played with. I have never really belonged to a club but at all the conventions, meets and game night I have attended or run I have for the most part gamed with perfectly regular chaps who have turned up clean shaven and hair nicely combed. Surely I know of the types you talk about but in my experience they tend to be in a minority.

Fresh from BLAM, I can say that lot were all paragons of friendliness and gentleman behaviour.Jimbibbly attending always means standards are lowered a bit but there are enough people who make up for it. Hell, Bullshot even turned up in a bowler hat!

But I digress! Back to lego solo gaming.

I like solo gaming. For the very simple reason that I am not competitive at all. I'd rather lose a game than win against somebody who needs to win for his ego. Plus I usually make up rules and goals of scenarios on the spot which rightfully would be highly irritating to any opponent. Oh, and I can cheat if I think the outcome of a fight or whatnot runs against the idea of the scenario.

That said I really enjoy playing with or against people who don't take the game too serious. Thank goodness the guys I once in a while play with belong in that group. Another reason why I hardly ever play on any conventions. Too many "must winners" around.

I play solo because no body around where i live wants to play  :( And i loose too often (at least alone you always win  ;))
Should be going to Bordeaux though next year and there's a club there!

Lego gaming, pretty cool. Before i wargamed i played with lego, and even when i did play at first i used lego terrain. Not all of us want to dish out hundreds of ££££ on figures, and hell, it's original!

My wife's favorite question after I play a solo game is "Well did you kick your butt?"

Well, do you?  :)

It'll be a sad and confusing day if one of my two warbands doesn't win in a solo game.
