Junkers F-13 floatplane
« on: March 17, 2008, 07:34:30 PM »
 spotted a fantastic floatplane model this weekend that would be great for Pulp adventures.  It's a bit pricey, but fully assembled and painted, at this size, perfect for 28mm, it's worth a look.  Because the plane first flew in 1919 it was available virtually throughout the interwar period.  It set an altitude record of over 22,000 feet in 1919, and then set an endurance record in 1921 of 26 hours 19 minutes.  322 of them were made and they were used in many different countries.  Because it seats two pilots and four pasengers, it seems to be just the right size for Pulp games.  Check it out:

Nice but $80 is a bit stiff even at these exchange rates. I could not help but noticing that Frankling Mint also sells this:

Maybe I should have posted that in in a zombie thread in the Future War sub forum.

1870 Euros!!!! I'd expect the real plane for that!
They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

Please don't encourage the Franklin Mint. The Franklin Mint is like some perverse creature out of William Gibson's nightmares, taking culture and converting it into meaningless consumerism. Even by naming them, they gain power in their lair, making wall-mount Bowie knives with enamel-plate scenes of bald eagles flying over hazy mountains and American flags in the background.

Yes, but a company that makes a model of a B-24 in the livery of the Evil Clown Air Force can't be all bad, surely?

On that Franklin Mint site. It's 1/48th scale too, and they only want about a million dollars for it.

It's really a formation assembly plane. Sadly the Evil Clown Air Force only exists inside my head.

I peruse the Franklin Mint site with horrified fascination. It's so nice of them to pass along so many of their treasured heirlooms, some which are many, many weeks old.

American cultural memory and taste rivals those of the common carp, I'll freely confess. The same culture which produced the great pulp magazines also produced the Franklin Mint. It is a two-edged sword.

That plane is absolutely awesome but unlike a lovely plate resplendant with cute puppy/kitten/lion cub/snowy leopard (delete as apllicable) I cannot see how one is supposed to attach it to the fake wood panelling in ones trailer.

its a braver man than me to even type their website in the browser, back page of the sunday supplements is enough for me.

and Pete. Whats this about dinosaurs?

I don't know quite what to make of their little vignette of The Transfiguration. In the original Raphael painting Jesus looks like a South American footballer celebrating a goal.

But that Franklin Mint thing... I've never seen Our Lord looking quite so gay.

Edit: Empower your Irish pride today! Ha! Ha! Only Yankee plastic Paddies would ever say that. By the way, I am offended that they don't have any overpriced Welsh tat. I have pride that needs empowering too. Presumably they export all that to the Welsh diaspora in Patagonia.
