We used Blood of Vol cultists for Ori:

Although there are a lot of other robed figures that are useful too.

and a mixture of drow and dolgaunt monks for wraiths:

Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

More good suggestions, thanks folks. I haven't started on anything just yet, but some things did arrive in the mail. (Reposted from http://obsidian3d.blogspot.ca/2012/11/sergeant-begin-dialling-sequence.html)

Another box full of unpainted metal goodness showed up at the post office for me yesterday. After getting it home and dumping it all on the table (then cleaning up the resultant mess of green packing peanuts) here's what I found.

What you see there is an assortment of the officially-produced 28mm Stargate miniatures by Phoenix Icons in (or around) 2007 or 2008. I ordered them from Cold War Miniatures in the UK and they arrived two weeks to the day after. They had quick service, nicely packed and shipped, and there was also a friendly little handwritten note inside saying thanks.

In case you can't tell by looking at the full-size image here's a run down of what I picked up:

-2x Stargate & DHD
-1x Jaffa First Prime
-2x Skull-capped Jaffa 4-pack
-2x Serpent Guard Jaffa 4-pack
-2x Hawk Guard Jaffa 4-pack
-2x Jaffa Heavy Cannon w/ gunner
-1x SG-1 Team (O'Neill, Teal'c, Jackson, Carter and Mitchell)
-1x SG-9 Team (5 generic SGC dudes armed w/ P90s)

In addition, a very kind fellow over on Lead Adventure has sent me a figure to use for my Go'a'uld system lord, which I'm eagerly awaiting. So what the heck am I going to do with all of these you might ask? It's a longish story that I'll try to shorten up a bit in the interest of well, typing less.

Stargate SG-1 was a show that I enjoyed when it was on TV but didn't watch religiously or even regularly. I had enjoyed the original movie a lot, and would catch the show when I could. I knew it ran for a long time and I enjoyed the overall concept, but passing interest was about all I really gave it. Fast forward from 1997~1998 to autumn 2012...the show popped up in my list of recommendations on Netflix, so I thought "what the hell, let's give it another look."

While there are some pretty goofy episodes (what sci-fi series doesn't have those?) overall I've really enjoyed it. I'm down to the last half-dozen episodes of the original series and am over halfway through the first season of Stargate Atlantis. Now, why the gaming/figures?

Since April or May of this year I have been madly working away at various miniature projects. Everything from 1920s pulp horror to superheroes to gothic sci-fi, pretty much whatever catches my fancy. Looking around a short while back for some rules to play 'weird' WW2 stuff someone suggested Ganesha Games fantasy rules. I bought those, liked them, and ended up grabbing a few more of their books...one of which was Flying Lead.

Near the back of that book there are two pages of ideas for doing a "Star Portal" near-future sci-fi series of games. It's very obviously Stargate-without-the-license and just sounded like a ton of fun. I mean, that's part of the beauty of the Stargate, almost anything could be on the other side of that event horizon.

As for the gates/DHDs, I bought two thinking that I could do one in red like the one at Stargate command in the SG-1 series, and another in blue like the Atlantis gate. Even though they were a little pricey I think that plan will work out well. After seeing the figures I do feel it's a bit of a shame that Phoenix Icons didn't continue producing them. The only complaint I had with them was that a lot of the staff weapons were pretty seriously bent from being in the package...but that was easily solved with some hot water and a little bit of careful patience.

Bringing things back around to the actual purchase decision, I think it was simply a confluence of mostly-unrelated events leading up to an idea that sounded like fun. Initially I'll be doing up the Jaffa and planning some games or even a campaign around them getting pummelled by SG-1 and their friends. I'll also be using the Jaffa as cultists in games of Strange Aeons and Kulten; maybe James and I can have a Jaffa vs. Cobra battle royale!

If inspiration stays with me, I can find the models, and people are interested in playing further, I will put together similar armies of figures to represent the Ori and the Wraith. If possible I'd also like to find figures to do up an Atlantis team with McKay, Ronen etc.

It should be fun, so stay tuned!

Thanks for the link, I'll have a look at it right away.

I received my wargods figure from Phil yesterday, thanks again for helping me out. It's perfectly suited to the role of system lord. I'll have to figure out what 'god' he is in my little corner of the Stargate universe.

For ori soldiers, I've found these minis:

They are the cygnar city guard from the Iron Kingdoms range (Warmachine/Hordes), by Privateer Press.
They are as close to the ori soldiers as possible, and the halberds should be easy to convert.
Problem, though, is that there are only these two models, and an unit of them may look rather dull. Some conversions repositioning the arms could sort that out, but I don't know whether you are willing to do that much work.

Haha, I didn't know William Davis was in Stargate.  Epic.  I think I also saw the painfully good-looking Morena Baccarin in there, obviously I should have been watching these shows.

I assume that horde of 28mm Jaffa Guards shown earlier are from Eureka, as I have a few myself.  But I though they were no longer available?

William Davis was only in a few episodes, but they were fun. I kept waiting for him to pull out a pack of cigarettes! Morena is in several eps in the last season, and she's dressed in some pretty spiffy outfits. Do find them and enjoy. :)

Thanks for the suggestion of the Cygnar city guards ajsalium, those are exactly what I was looking for! :D

It seems Santa didn't see the Army Painter Plate Metal primer spray on my wish list, so I went and ordered it myself. My Jaffa and gate will get primed this weekend. For the Ori I was able to get a bunch of the Cygnar City Guard figures, so now just need to track down some good priests, a Doci and an Orici figure.

The Wraith models will be fun collecting, and I have some ideas for making an Atlantis team of figures. Have to wait a bit on that though.

Always nice to see another LAF'er doing Stargate.

I briefly considered the Phoenix miniatures too but found that they were too small for my liking.

IN the end I went with 15mm instead. Even smaller!  lol

Thanks. :)

I'm not terribly concerned with the scale differences between 28mm and 32mm figures. In a competitive game, sure it can give one player an advantage when using direct sight. However if it's simple base-to-base range I don't think it really makes a difference.

I'm a for-fun gamer so it's more a matter of my building models and terrain to satisfy my own nerdity than anything else. :)

Hmm not sure what you mean? I have not heard of competition stargate. But it's probably there somewhere. ..  lol

The figures are nice but I found that the jaffa with helmets stand no taller than my regular historical miniatures. :-)

Anyway! I'm not a scale fascist either and looking forward to seeing what you make of it.

Stargate in 28mm: Chevron One Encoded

Several more photos can be found at the above address as well!

Stargate in 28mm: Chevron One Encoded

I was really pleased with my first use of the Plate Mail Army Painter primer spray when I used it on my Forge Fathers team, the Royal Eternian Rams, for DreadBall. I ordered it knowing that it would also be a great time saver for the first batch of stuff I had in mind for my Stargate project.  I am very happy at how well it covers and how smooth it looks after application. I don't have a lot of use for coloured primer due to playing mainly skirmish games, but it is very good primer and I'll likely be switching to it even for black, white and grey.

Shortly after I received the official Stargate figures I cleaned up and based all the Jaffa figures and prepped one of the two gates I bought. There are three 8-man squads of Jaffa, two heavy cannons with operators, and a First-Prime to ensure their loyalty and obedience.

I'm still uncertain of the best way to construct and base the cannons, as they're two part models. I would like them to be separate from their operator models, which might require using a non-round base. I'll have to do some experimenting to see how that works out. Of course if you have any suggestions please post a comment and let me know about it!

As you can see above I've primed all of my Jaffa troopers using the plate mail primer. There isn't a lot of paint work left to do here. I'll add some gold and metallic-blue highlighting to their armour, some glowing eye effects to the hawk and serpent guards, a little detailing on the staff weapons, and then probably use some Army Painter Quickshade or the equivalent inks to finish them off. And of course I'll need to decide what kind of theme to use for all of their bases. Desert sand doesn't seem too far off the mark though...

So what about a Go'auld System Lord, er I mean a god, for them to worship? I'm going to use a Wargods of Aegyptus figure that was very kindly sent to me at no charge by Phil from the Lead Adventures forums. So thanks again for the nice gesture Phil, I truly appreciate your generosity! It didn't make sense to prime my system lord in silver, so I left him primed black, exactly as I received him. I'm trying to determine exactly what to call him and what kind of back story he should have. Please feel free to offer up any ideas or suggestions you have to me here! Once I get the warriors painted I'll probably know what colours to use for this guy.

Obviously priming the gate and dial-home device in silver was a simple choice. This gate will be painted with red lights to match the style of the gate from the SG-1 TV series. Both the gate and DHD will start off with a black wash to darken them. It shouldn't take much work to get this thing done up quite nicely.

Finally we need some heroes to fight off this intergalactic menace. Both sets of SG-1 and SG-9's models are still in their unopened packages. I'm undecided on whether to use olive drab or black for the uniforms when I do put them together. Whatever I decide, I'm pretty excited for this project to be underway!

Obsidian3d (or anyone else) do you have a link to the Stargate miniatures as I can't seem to find them now?  I've been meaning to pick them up for a while and your force finally got me to cave in but now they seem to have vanished  :o
