Sounds interesting indeed, I fast-read the linked rules, simple and slightly modiefied version of the Battlefield Evolution rules and FREE!
I will follow this with  great interest!

What would be a good comic (sampler) to get into RT?

NOOOOoooooo! There goes my money!

I have two or three Rogue Troopers and Morden (the mercenary sniper) by Citadel and both Northern and Southern troopers by Foundy (their 2000AD range). I have also the Rogue Trooper boardgame. Just been contemplating making some kind hogu-bogus sci-fi force by using different range of miniatures (although the Citadel ones are quite small)... oh well, I guess I really have to start it now.

The trades are worth grabbing if you can find them.  There are also larger compendium trades now which you can find at most good bookshops and comic shops.

If you're into gaming consoles there was a rogue trader game by rebellion for the xbox. Works on the 360 too. Colour Pallete is really nice and gives you good insight into the world of Rogue.

Now my next comment is for those that back these KS things. I assume the more money they get in the bigger your pile of loot gets for the same price, yeah?

That pretty much covers it, Scurv.

As they reach certain levels of funding beyond the original start-up cost you reach what is known as a 'stretch goal' and hence get extra stuff for your investment.

Looks great but I think perhaps a little too soon after the JD (which still hasn't finished...), I hope it won't be too rushed...
