Fantasy gladiatorial arena.
« on: 02 February 2013, 01:18:18 AM »
Here's my new project, any ideas on what it is?

The figure is just to show scale and I slotted him into a hole that was free, he's on a 30mm base.
I'm going to have fun with this. I even have a bunch of rules kicking around in my head to go along with this project.

 lol
Well done YPU
I'm planning on sculpting some rock tiles around the edges. Making a few sandy dunes out of milliput and covering it in sand. I'll make a mold of this and duplicate it a few times.
I also have some pillars to make, the bag contents, and other bits are an entrance way, an animal pit, a central dais, fallen pillars and so on. I may even attempt a go at some statues to take the place of the pillars.
All laser cut mdf at the moment.
Was it that obvious? lol
Edit: for anyone just looking at this thread the title  a a bit ambiguous to start with.

Some pillars well on their way already

Three on the left are the bottom parts that slot into the arena floor holes. The two on the right fit on top of the middle pillar piece as seen in the photos below.

Lots of rubble to add to it and some weathering too.

More of a lucky shot. Actually I didn't even realise the discs in the second picture were the pillars I just went by the clearly circular shape of the main board and the evenly spread holes in it, for some reason that just clicked into place with the gladiator movie style pillars spread around the edges.

Here are the pillars all cast up. I've got some more on the mold as I write.

Ad with the complete pillar in its two sections.

I may paint them up sometime really soon to see what they actually look like. I don't know whether to go with marble or stone. Marble would probably just need a wash and the base done tbh.

:) thanks. I'm not entirely happy with them. The parts didn't line up after gluing.as a ruined pillar set they work well though as they don't need to be lined up. If I was going to make a set that lined up perfectly what I would now do in the laser cut process is make 2 1mm diameter wholes on opposite ends, you wouldn't see them in the final piece but I could insert a small rod down it to line them up perfectly. You live and learn. To it ill make a mold of a different pillar top and the fallen pillar I have created.

Very nicely done - a clever idea.

Where did you get all the pillar mdf pieces?

lol I love that music  ;D
I designed the pieces on Inkscape, a free 2d CAD programme. I got them printed at ponoko, it takes a few weeks for them to get done but its nice to have it all created myself.

Thanks.
Here's the next update.
Two more pillar pieces.
One fallen pillar and extra pillar top. This worked out rather well because the pillar top can go on a part of the fallen pillar or onto the other half pillar.

This last photo shows it on the standing pillar with a duplicate section beside it.

Probably a lot. The packages are quite large but you could always just check it out. Ponoko
