Post Apoc Terain paint job advice
« on: February 04, 2013, 03:16:01 AM »
So I havent painted really anything and my dad used to be in trains and has some random odds and ends i have found that he no longer uses.  So I was interested in getting into molds and casting so I tried so that with some of of the pieces. With the intent to practice painting. Thats the background.

Dumpsters:

I base coated with a craft store block. heavily diluted.
Then dry brushed a little heavily based on the photos, with citadel dwarf skin.

I have citadel lead belcher and administration grey. I dont think they would be a good metallic coat.

So im wondering if anyone has any metal paints that would finish it off well or tips on how to paint them. The dwarf skin was my attempt to have them rusted thru.

Wood crates and Rubble piles

I base coated black and dry bushed sable brown.  Idk what i think about them. I painted the the sable brown at first and hated it and redid them in black and tried this i like them more but not super pleased with the effect.

On the rubble piles i base coated black, craft store grey and dry brushed with the citadel lead belcher and administration grey. But i dont really like the effect that came about. Any tips on how to make it look more like concrete?

thanks for any help guys and sorry for the long post.

Wood kind of greys when it weathers. Dry brush with light grey high lights.

for rusty dumpsters, here's what I did to mine :
paint the whole thing in a rusty colour (you could easily use valejo terracota or some other red brown maybe even with a drop of yellow added to it)
then I use liquid mask. I apply it to the model with a sponge (one with fairly large gaps, not the stuff from blisters)
when dry I airbrush the colour I want the dumpster to have over it, but you could also use a brush (probably best to dab the paint on as strokes could tear the mask off)
Once that is dry, I rub off the mask et voila :

P.S. since I made these I discovered the dust and rust set from Lifecolor. Awesome paints  ;D

For rust I use a chunk of sponge/foam from a figure blister or a old ratty hard bristle brush.   I dab/stiple on a dark color then go over the are again with a lighter color or two.  Once in a while I add some metal color to show paint scrapes.   I'm about the worst painter out there, and focus on easy techniques.   I'm pretty happy with the results I get.  Here are some examples:

and my Sedition Wars bases are my most recent attempt:

Well uhm, good question. I don't really have a recipe for that.
I prime 'em black, then basecoat with dark brown and finish it by drybrushing with earth or khaki.
For aged wood I add some grey.

Another step I might do, not always is to give cover it with a black wash to bring out the grain.
