Suggestions for Renaissance skirmish rules?

Hello,

Inspired by the TAG Kickstarter (and their other Renaissance miniatures) I'm looking for a skirmish rules set that allows you to play with about 10 to 20 models per side (both mounted and dismounted), but also allows you to play with several different factions (Ottomans, Polish, English, Italian etc.).

I was thinking of writing a Mordheim mod, but if there are rules already available, that would save me a lot of time :)

Preferably, there are also some kind of campaign rules included.

Who knows of something that fits the bill?

I was thinking of adapting Sharpe Practice myself and if it works going through the Lardies scheme for playtesting and releasing rulesets. Bit in the future though.

Try "Witchfinder General": set circa ECW, and although it has a supernatural component, the basic rules are a very sound set for skirmish and can accomodate up to 40 - 60 figures per side. I say this having played a couple of dozen games with them over the last year.

A friend of mine got the Sharpe Practise rules, so I will look into that.

Those Spanish General Rules look very promising also :)

I'm still wondering if "Have pike will travel" is a good game for that aera. Unfortunately I know no one who owns a copy of it.

I LOVE Sharp Practice, but it won'r really work with 10-20 models per side. I thought Smooth and Rifled called for more figures also, but I could be wrong on that. I think you might be better off starting with one of Ganesha Games "Song of..." rules sets or Rattrap's Gloire or your Mordheim suggestion.

Try Brink of Battle, it's not period specific but has enough rules, profiles and period grades to make it work with anything historical from Ancients to Modern. It's single model alternate activation and most often has 6-20 models per side depending on what kind of force you are playing.

second witchfinder general , done" historical " ECw games with as few as 10 figures a side and as many as 30 (infantry and cav ) plus of course loads of games with witches  >:D

If you can find a set anywhere of the old rule set 'Once Upon a Time in the West Country' they are still worth a look. They have allowed me to play some great skirmish games over the years and even though they were created for the Thirty Years War and ECW they could be used for periods before and after the mid 17th Century with a few tiny tweeks here and there. :)

Also take a look at Hot Trod and Red Hand.  Designed for 16th Century Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers, but with a little tinkering could easily be used for many other campaigns.  (And contrary to many renaisassance skirmish rules, pikes can't really skirmish!  Too long a weapon, and too easy to get around, in one-on-one combat.  Pikemen have to operate in large bodies.  If going into skirmish type situations, they would use their side swords, or a cut-down "half-pike" - effectively a spear.  Likewise, fully armored knights on barded warhorses make terrible skirmishers - that's what the lighter horse are for)

I'd suggest Flashing Steel out of Ganesha Games. It's designed to be a single man skirmish up to 15 a side and is specifically geared for cinematic swashbuckling Three Musketeers action. Simple system - easy play. And it has a campaign and game generator.
