WIP of the Royal North Surrey Regiment
« on: March 02, 2013, 12:55:57 AM »

Lots of Wargames Factory Zulu Wars British, mostly painted as an early 1880s version of the (fictional) Royal North Surreys (from the 1939 film of The Four Feathers, though that film is set in 1896 - I thought I'd go back to some of their earlier history). The officers are partly from the fantastic Baker Company, and partly from a recent shipment from our very own Whiskyrat.

I'll be coming back to update this thread as I get further down the road but more info about the regiments and characters can be found on my VSF blog.

Not great to put together (several of their arms fell off overnight) and a bit stiff in their posses. On the other hand they're very cheap, and I'm such a chump that even great figures look "a bit rubbish" (is the polite version) after I've painted them - so my thinking is, for rank and file at least, that I may as well use budget figures, as they're never going to be works of art anyway.

They are what they are, really - cheap plastic figures intended to bulk out units.

B'dum, ching! He's here all week folks...

Some of them (the khaki ones) haven't been glued on as you might expect, but at least four redcoat arms also fell off (one of the aiming and three of the guys just holding their rifles). The redcoat arm towards the top right was only found under my table in the midst of my very dark carpet minutes before I took the photo. That was fun. Though not as much fun as when I dropped the standard pole that is behind Ensign Jensen - 'err, darling, watch out, I've dropped a 4cm piece of brass rod on the floor... with a sharpened end... and it's painted black...'

Ironclad do a nice heliograph team that might fit with them.

Do you have a link?  I couldn't find them.

These guys.

They are very nice indeed. My fave unit of all is 10 Ironclad Brits in home service dress that I managed (somehow) to get from our very own (and very lovely, but madly over-generous) Majorsmith a few years ago - they're kinda where I started with the VSF madness, and remain the best painted unit in my collection. And Ironclad remain one of my favourite manufacturers - hence being the proud owner of Ironcladman, Captain Nemo, some Sanwar, the MIB Agents, the Evil Henchmen...and the drooling not-owner (yet) of at least 2 dozen other minis from them!

Nice start.

I bought a few Redoubt figures as my filler troops - cheap and cheerful.

Now stop yakking and go put some more paint on them. ;)

Yessir, sorrysir.

Though any paint is more than the two officers had when I got them a few weeks ago, so I am making some progress... but yes, there will be more.

There's a little more paint on them now - just a quick (and slightly fuzzy) shot of some North Surreys, and Captain Yates from UNIT, investigating a settlement on Mars.
