Painting Help Needed - Updated with first attempt
« on: March 20, 2013, 12:54:27 AM »
I have several packs of Peter Pig miniatures from their "Hey, You in the Jail" range.  I was thinking of starting to paint these up but I have no idea where to begin.  Can someone point me to or offer up a basic painting guide for me?  I am partially color blind so actual paint colors would help greatly (this is why pictures are not so helpful for me).  I mostly use vallejo model colors.

Thanks in advance.

Old West?

Why not try some dark colours.  Black, brown, grey, blue.  Not so much a painting guide as  "just keep it quite dark and muted."

Link if it helps.  http://www.orctrader.co.uk/OldWest.html
Most only three "levels" of colour.

Easiest way would be to simply watch some Old West films.  Historically, while generic Cowboys did wear muted outfits (leather only comes in so many shades or brown!)...plenty of people had rather colourful shirts and fancy duds.

Tombstone the movie did a pretty good job of showing this off.  I keep my models muted, with an occasional brighter blouse/shirt etc.  Well-dressed men could be rather lavish outfits, but your average homesteader would be wearing very cheap, minimalist clothing - rugged, and often very dirty.  Cowboys on the trail would have been wearing the same clothes for months at a time, with an occasional wash in the river.

I like using colours which look as if they were vibrant at one point, but have been faded by the sun.   :)  At the end of the day, is anyone going to care?  Nope. :D  Choose what you want!

OK.  Good point.  I will take a crack at this tonight.  I have my first few figures on painting sticks and ready to go.

Pardon the crap paintjobs, but here's an example of my figures and what I mean.

You can see the "work" clothing is very muted, and dull...but many guys have bright ties or shirts, etc.  I think it's a pretty decent assumption.  Not saying it's correct, but it works for me.  Gives me guys just enough flavour.  I like contrast of the browns with stuff like pink/sky blue etc.

Pardon the crap paintjobs

Your paintjob is not crap at all but it is "ruined" by the glossy varnish.

It's a personal preference.  lol  It's Army Painter's medium shade.  Oddly they're not nearly that glossy appearing on the games table.  I bought a can of flattening spray, but then decided I actually like the look.  Reminds me of my Britain's Miniatures from when I was a kid...so now I just leave them.   :-X

Your price seems reasonable but the postage to the US would kill me.

OK, here is my first effort.  I messed it up.  I used Windsor & Newton ink for shading.  I was supposed to brush on some varnish before reaching for the matt varnish.  Ooops.  i ended up spraying the matt varnish first.  Now the minis are a bit dark.

Sorry for the blurry picture.

These were taken with my cell and are not the best quality.

Is there hope for these?  Should I repaint.  Any suggestions?

Chris
